Forget everything you think you know about fighting fire with water as you know it.

How does one 4x4 knock down a fire using a fraction of the water of a full truck — and leave a fraction of the damage behind?

Ultra-High Pressure. DFW Fire & Rescue NPCfrom Paarl ( est 2017 ) has run it since 2020.

Everyone assumes more water means more firefighting power. Ultra-High Pressure (UHP) turns that idea on its head — and the results speak for themselves.

How UHP ( Ultra High Pressure) systems works !!!

A conventional hose throws large droplets, and most of that water runs straight off without ever touching the heat — in a typical low-pressure flow, around 90% of the water is wasted.
UHP does the opposite.
It forces water through a precision nozzle at extreme pressure ( 140 BAR/53L/Min) , shattering it into a fine mist of millions of tiny droplets.

Now the clever part !!!

When water flashes to steam, it expands roughly 1,700 times in volume. So when that fine mist hits the heat of a fire, each tiny droplet converts almost instantly and erupts outward — and this does two things at once.
First, the phase change absorbs an enormous amount of heat, cooling the fire fast.
Second, that violent expansion of steam displaces the oxygen the fire needs to survive.
Cooled and starved of air at the same time, the fire simply gives up. Those micro-droplets flash to steam almost instantly, drawing heat out of the fire far faster and knocking it down quicker.

More droplets means more surface area, and more surface area means more of this reaction happening at once — which is why UHP typically extinguishes fires using one-fifth to one-third of the water, in 60–80% less time than conventional methods.

The bonus nobody talks about: water damage !!!

Conventional firefighting with lots of water saves the building from flames but often drowns it — water damage frequently costs as much as the fire itself.
Because UHP uses so little water to achieve the same result, it leaves behind a fraction of the water damage.
Fastest knockdown, least destruction. That's the whole goal.

Innovation you can feel — literally !!!

Here's something the public never realises.
The water weight a hose holds per metre:
65 mm hose: ~3.3 litres/m is 100kg per 30 meter hose line
50 mm hose: ~2.0 litres/m is 60 kg per 30 meter hose line
38 mm hose: ~1.1 litres/m is 33 kg per 30 meter hose line
18 mm UHP line: ~0.25 litres/m 7,5 kg per 30 meter hose line !!!

A conventional charged fire hose line is punishingly heavy, because water is heavy. A single 30-metre length of 65 mm hose holds around 100 kg of water — before you even count the hose itself. Now imagine dragging that up a staircase, around corners, through a smoke-filled house by yourself ? You'd have to be an exceptionally fit firefighter to do it fast.

DFW tackled this problem years ago.
We moved off those heavyweight 50 mm and 65 mm lines to lighter 38 mm hose, paired with pumps that deliver higher pressure — giving comparable the same water flow while making the line far easier for the crew to handle.

Then: UHP takes it to another level entirely !!!

Our full 60-metre UHP line holds only about 15 litres of water — a fraction of the weight — yet delivers superior fire-knockdown power.
One person can pull it up the stairs and around corners with ease. Lighter crew load, faster deployment, less water, less damage. That's innovation you can feel in your hands.

Our actual DFW Fire &Rescue unit — the numbers
This isn't theory. Here's exactly what DFW runs today:

52 litres per minute at 140 bar (about 2,030 psi)
60 m of 18 mm steel-mantle hose off an electric reel
Fed by a 650-litre tank — roughly 12 minutes of continuous UHP mist, doing the work of far more water from a traditional hose line.
Mounted on a 3.2-litre 4x4 SUV — fast, agile, near-unlimited access almost anywhere

The steel-mantle edge !!!
That 60 m steel-mantle line solves a real problem. It can be dragged across the razor edges of steel roof sheeting without being sliced open — exactly where ordinary hoses fail in shack and informal-settlement fires. Small piece of engineering, big difference on the ground.

Another vehicle accident on Sonstraal road Paarl.

A vehicle lost control on the Sonstraal road and nearly hit a Fidelity Adt car in its path.

Despite the worst fears, given the damage, 3 young men climbed out ( after inspection) with minor injuries. They were given warm blankets by the DFW group and some driving safe advice.

Police as well as metro rescue assisted and after a final inspection, the DFW EFAR crew returned to base.

Local Church in the spotlight.

Tucked into an area that still knows real hunger, inequality, despair and crime stands a small church with an enormous heart: Ascension Church, on Keerweder Road.

Since the arrival of Father Earl, something remarkable has taken hold. What was once quiet has begun to bloom. Today the parish draws people from every walk of life — every standing, near and far — all pulled in by the same thing: the warmth, the guidance and the genuine hope that radiates from this well-led little congregation. From one modest building now flow a soup kitchen, a creche, and a steady current of care for a community that desperately needs it.

But a bright light attracts more than the faithful. As we've shared before, the church has also drawn those with darker intentions — people who dared to break in and destroy what others worked so hard to build. That would break a lesser spirit. Not here. Because for every setback, the good pouring into this place outweighs it many times over — and, encouragingly, more and more local hands are reaching out to help.

Today was proof of exactly that.

Our fire-response partners at TOLCON — whose tunnel sits just a few hundred metres up the road — arrived on the church grounds having heard about the damaged lights and cameras. Quietly, and entirely as a donation, they set about repairing, replacing and upgrading the church's security system and wifi connection. No fanfare. Just good people doing good, because it's the right thing to do. Thank you, TOLCON. 🧡

And this is where we turn to you.

Father Earl and his team carry a heavy load — a soup kitchen to keep running, a creche to nurture, and a beautiful little church to maintain — and they cannot do it alone. So we ask, humbly but boldly: would your business, your congregation, your family consider coming on board? Busy morning for the DFW responders. 🚨

Paarl, 13 Augustus 2026

It wasn't even 11am, and our team had already lived a full day.

10:43 — an emergency alert reached our line: a man had collapsed in the Klippiesdal area and was unresponsive. One of our DFW members relayed the exact location and situation through two quick WhatsApp messages to our emergency number — and within minutes, three DFW responders, Anthea Carlse, Ricardo Cant and Daan van Leeuwen Boomkamp, were racing to the scene, together with Ricardo Green, a Fidelity ADT officer who volunteers as a DFW responder in his own time.

On site, the man was stabilised and given first-aid treatment. With ambulance services reportedly not immediately available, our team didn't hesitate — the patient was transported in his friend's car, under DFW es**rt, straight to Paarl Hospital for further care.

DFW carries out this kind of emergency work free of charge, as part of our community social welfare programme, whenever our capability allows.

From there, the morning turned to those quietly holding on.

Kairos Creche, Ribbokstraat (Chicago) — a tiny creche where a handful of women care for 55 children with almost no means at all. We delivered baby food and clothing — generously collected by Leliefontein Kennels and by Denise Fourie and her wonderful team from Christ Church Paarl's "Crafts for Missions" — and fitted a fire extinguisher in their little kitchen, just in case. This is one of several places DFW helps to fund and support, where the need is simply too great to ignore.

Ascension Church, Keerweder Road — we dropped off food, children's clothing and blankets, and installed a new fire extinguisher for the church's brand-new, volunteer-run soup kitchen, led by the admirable Father Earl, who has quite clearly brought extra light to that community. Ascension Church is one of the wonderful initiatives DFW is proud to sponsor — because the hope and strength that faith brings is exactly what these hard times call for.

And then, back at base, one more. A mother of four arrived at DFW HQ in despair, having been badly assaulted, seeking help and medical attention. Working closely with the Paarl Police, we're relieved to share that a suspect was arrested this morning — and, we're told, is unlikely to be granted bail.

People often ask what a fire and rescue team does all day when there are no flames to fight.
