It’s been a busy week, for In2beef Yesterday I was at Escourt, we were focusing on Oestrus spotting, Calving, calving problems and other after calving problems. Which is why we advise our stockman’s to constantly check on heavily pregnant cows, in order to assist and care for the mother and the calf.

The main goal of farming is production, this is the most exciting time for every farmer, but the management, nutrition, health and care will determine the weaknesses and strengths of each and every parameter listed above on the outcome of its calves.

Today we had another interesting topic on calving which touches, common metabolic illnesses that are critically affecting pregnant or fresh calved cows, more especially in Dairy we see a lot of Milk fever and Ketosis(acetonaemia).

It is very important to note that these 2 metabolic illnesses are the most silent killers in an animal production enterprise, more especially in Dairy farming. Most workers tend to notice the symptoms late or treat animals late, or not supervise newly calved cows which can lead to missed diagnosis.

It is very important to explain the importance of supervising pregnant and newly lactating cows. Make sure your workers are exposed to treatment and they know which treatment to use and how, in every case to avoid such losses.
