Following the passing of Mr Simon Perkin, his family members have requested that a Memorial Service to celebrate his life be held on the SACS campus on a date to be announced in the New Year.

Tributes have poured in for Mr Perkin. This one is written by Mr Graeme Wepener who was taught by Mr Perkin at Rondebosch Boys’ High School and then became his colleague at SACS.

“I first met Simon in 1987 when I made it into the Senior Cadet Band at Rondebosch Boys’ High. It only struck me when writing this that in all the years I knew him I never asked Simon why he, not to my knowledge being particularly musically inclined, was Master-in-Charge of the band. It was there though that I first encountered two of Simon’s great traits, his meticulous organisation and his love for food. The band ran clinically thanks mainly to the multi-coloured notices that went up on the school noticeboard early in the morning, Simon having arrived at school just after dawn. The band's year-end function was a spectacular meal at the De Waal Sun in the city. I remember feeling very special and privileged to eat such a wonderful meal as a baby in Standard 7. My first ever taste of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding (it’s weird what sticks in one’s head!)

In 1988 I had Simon for both History and English, a full fourteen lessons a week. I soon found out he was as organised in the classroom. He had a huge passion for his subject, for teaching and getting the best out of his pupils. Like all teachers he had many favourite sayings. His history classes were generally: “Cooking with Gas!” His notes (typed in those days on a typewriter, obviously in CAPITAL letters) were legendary. Even though he left Rondebosch to return to his beloved SACS in the middle of 1988, his notes were passed on from generation to generation. It’s thanks to those notes that I received one “A” in matric two years later. Simon never lost his passion for teaching History and when he turned sixty-five in 2013 he asked to stay on at SACS in order to take his Grade 10 class through to matric. They did not let him down and achieved excellent results, all except one receiving an “A”, with a class average of over 80%!

When I arrived at SACS in 2005 Simon’s warm smile was here to welcome me into the staffroom. He assisted me as I made my way as a novice teacher and coach. When he finished coaching rugby himself I had no hesitation in asking him to manage my rugby team. Once again his organisation was always spot on!

The one part of Simon’s involvement that I didn’t enjoy was touring with him. His insistence that we stick to the itinerary to the minute and eat every meal on time was a bit taxing.

We worked together for a number of seasons and shared many memorable moments together, including the epic Bishops win in 2011. What I appreciated most was his sage advice that helped me many times when the going got tough.

More recently I have enjoyed popping into the library and chatting to Simon. He always wanted to know everything that was going on at SACS and was eager to help wherever he could. He retained his wonderful sense of humour right up until the end, knowing that without it one would never survive in teaching.

Although there were times when we wondered if he would ever leave SACS, it was only fitting that he was here to the end. Mr Perkin Sir, you will be sorely missed.”

SACS is producing at least two thirds of its electricity via its solar system. Soon we will be installing a system at Michaelis Hostel as well, this will complete our system. We will then have a combined 150kWh system on the campus, servicing the High School, Rosedale and Michaelis Hostel. During the holiday and weekends, any surplus power is sent back to the City of Cape Town via a bi-directional meter. This provides us with additional funds. Below is a graphic of our system at school showing that we have produced 124MWh in 14 months.

The Steinway 88 Keys Project

SACS High School has a proud tradition of communal singing in the Hofmeyr Hall for assembly and special occasions. Gatherings of 900 people have sung "The S.A.C is the College for me..." loudly and proudly with the accompaniment of SACS' most valued asset - the Steinway and Sons 'Model D' Concert Grand Piano.

This instrument, truly a most valued and revered dame, has an approximate replacement value of between R2.7million and R3.1 million and was manufactured in Hamburg, Germany in 1928 and bought by SACS in 1961. She has been tuned regularly and received major maintenance in 2004. The Model D Steinway Grand Piano, at 274 cm in length, is a majestic musical instrument (the pinnacle of concert grands) and is the overwhelming choice of the world's greatest pianists and for anyone who demands the highest level of musical expression.

This instrument is in dire need of a complete rebuild in order to be a glorious, reliable instrument that will accompany many more generations of SACS young men. The overhaul will include transport of the piano from SACS to the workshop of Ian Burgess-Simpson, a full stripping of the mechanism, the import of new parts from Germany, repair of the outer woodwork and re-assembly of the instrument by expert specialist technicians.

It will cost R424,928 to fund the piano rebuild. 'Why the exorbitant cost?' you might ask. If you equate the Steinway Piano to a vintage Rolls-Royce, one does not rebuild its engine and interior with imitation parts, but to maintain its value, one replaces it with original manufacturers' parts.

SACS, therefore, launches the 88 Keys Project by inviting parents of current learners, Old Boys, and the wider SACS community to make the rebuild of the instrument a reality by contributing to raise the required funds. All donors are invited to name one of the 88 keys of the instrument as their own at the cost of R5000 ($300) per key. A plaque commemorating this rebuild of the instrument will be mounted proudly in the Hofmeyr Hall. The plaque will take the form of a keyboard with the donors' names inscribed on each key (exemplified here). If you would like to donate a smaller amount to the cause, we would greatly appreciate your contribution. Parents are invited to make a donation via the Kari App while the greater SACS community is most welcome to make contact with the SACS Finance Office.

This most valuable asset belongs to ALL members of the SACS family, and we invite you to take part in making the dame sing once again... TOGETHER WE CAN.

A section 18(A) Tax Certificate can be issued for a donation of R5000 or more. Please email [email protected] for details.
Current SACS parents can also make smaller donations via the Karri app.

Our USA based SACS Old Boys can get a Tax benefit if they donate to this project via the following link -
