Pippa Shaper and Wilna at The International Fundraising Conference in Amsterdam just before facilitating an Authentic Resilience Masterclass and Workshop…
We are super proud and honoured that The Resilience Factory was asked to be at this amazing International event; and I am so sad to miss it. (Instead of teaching an Authentic Resilience Masterclass I am currently living one back home).
I miss you partner —- well done to you and Wilna for holding the fort!!

"In the midst of hate I found there was, within me, an invincible love.
In the midst of tears I found there was, within me, an invincible smile.
In the midst of chaos I found there was, within me, an invincible calm.
I realized, through it all, that…
In the midst of winter I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.
And that makes me happy.
For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back."

( By: Albert Camus )

Now that is real authentic resilience … knowing that you have a treasure and strength within you that will sustain you through anything

Wishing you a beautiful and powerful month

Two important parts of Authentic Resilience are 1) being able to Reach-In, sit with, welcome and witness our vulnerability AND 2) being able to Reach-Out, ask for and accept help when needed.
Having had full hip replacement surgery ten days ago I have been humbly reminded of just how both difficult AND absolutely essential this is.
Each one of us sees the world through our own lense … don’t assume those around you ( even those who know and love you well) know what you need … be clear and courageous in the asking.

Engagement. The temptation when we are feeling at the edge of despair is often to shut down. However, the solution to feeling isolated and scared is in fact the opposite. It lies in remaining engaged in relationships, communities and in life – actively tracking down moments of joy. Outside of work and immediate family, who are you speaking to every day, who are you connecting with?

When last did you tell someone what they mean to you? When did you last offer support to someone? If you’re working remotely, it's really important to find ways to connect with your team on a social/personal basis and not just on your deliverable tasks. Check in with each other daily.

There are simple things we can do to reduce the impact trauma has on our lives. Setting personal boundaries is an important aspect of this. Speaking up can be a release and knowing what is OK for you and what isn't is important. As important as sharing that information so you can keep yourself safe.

Perhaps this could be a new mantra for 2024? “ I know what is and isn't OK for me and am able to share it.”

Compassion. What the world needs now more than ever is kindness – compassion for both ourselves and others.

When we operate from a place of fear our behaviour often becomes dysfunctional – narrow and ungenerous or unkind.

Compassion shows up not just in what you think but how you act. What do you DO to be kind to yourself? Think about what feels good for you, eg, nourishing delicious food, a hot bath, a walk with a friend, reading a good book, sharing with someone how you feel. And compassion to others – we have no idea what other people are going through so be generous in our thoughts towards them.. Always start by giving them the benefit of the doubt.

P – Pay; A – Attention; I – Investigate or Ignore; N – Navigate
Remember that to move from bracing against to embracing will help you soften. Become aware of your self-talk and train the voice in your head to speak more encouragingly and positively. Lean in and pay attention to the pain, then choose to ignore or tolerate it if it’s not serious and confront it if it is. Confront whatever your reality might be whilst holding onto and cultivating hope. When things feel simply too huge to handle then prepare mentally. Mental visualisation is powerful medicine for mastering pain and fear – those who are unprepared can be unhinged by the smallest of things. One Breath - One Step - One Day - at a time …

Comfort food is food that feels like a warm cosy blanket for the soul as well as the stomach.

We all have our own ‘go to’ foods for comfort and sometimes that is just what we need to fill up from the inside. As long as we aren't “comfort eating” all of the time there is nothing wrong with a good home cooked something to make you feel better.

In fact, comfort food is a way to keep us connected to the memories of home, love, nurturing and hope. It reminds us of times of recovery and being taken care of. Looking after our needs is a vital part of ‘Renewal’, which we need in order to be Authentically Resilient.

Paying Attention to Pain gives us Options

A useful trick that nurses use when a patient is writhing in pain is to ask them to describe their pain in careful detail; the mere act of having to think and breathe already calms them. Stepping outside of our pain in order to observe it, pay attention to it and describe it already changes our relationship to that pain.

Emotional pain is the same, we don’t always get to choose whether we are in pain or not, but we do get to choose how much we suffer as a result. Rewiring our relationship to pain is a powerful tool.

This is just one of the reasons that journaling is such an effective skill because it helps us to separate from our pain and pay attention to it as an observer – so that we don’t become the pain – then to put it down on paper, to analyse it, reflect on it and make meaning from it thereby rewiring our relationship to it daily.
