A better host

You can imprison your dream with a ‘life sentence.’

A ‘Life Sentence’ is a statement we habitually use without conscious thought of its debilitating effects. Roy Heeley has written a book on the concept, it is worth understanding. As I am in the business of equipping people to make their dreams become a reality, I often meet people who have great dreams, but the language they use imprisons their dream before it can even take root. They take some label or past failure and begin to speak this over everything they think about or do. Their sentences usually start with the words “I am not good at…” or “I am just…” or “I can’t…” These sentence beginnings are as good as saying I am a failure and plan to remain that way for the rest of my life and beyond if anyone lets me. We need to be careful of the words we use as they can give life to our dream or send it to the grave forever.

A good dream host

A fulfilled dream reveals the quality of the character of its host.

The perfect host nourishes, nurtures and strengthens his or her dream with regular visualization, positive affirmation, belief, passion, experience, faith, focused thought, optimism, possibility thinking, positive mental attitude, dedication, determination, diligence, persistence, success planning, resilience, clarification, definition, communication, presentation, values, wisdom, principles, objectives, strategies, success teams, daily action, correct habits, study, knowledge acquisition, constant attention, single mindedness, addiction, habitation. These hosts seem to eat, drink and sleep their dream. Nothing seems to be able to distract them from their treasure. When you start doing these things then you are on the road to becoming the perfect host for your dream to grow to its full potential. Be the best host you can be.

Dreams cannot be crushed

Dreams can never be crushed, only the spirit of the dream carrier.

The concept that a dream can be crushed is fundamentally flawed. The generation who passed this life sentence down to us missed the fact that a dream is something spiritual not physical. It is an idea. You cannot eliminate an idea. Once it is announced it is out. Another thing people say is that “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.” This is an affirmation against the power of words. The truth is that life and death lie in the words we speak. But even here, the words spoken over a person with a dream can only have a permanent affect if they permit them to. You and I can reverse any curse by speaking life back into our treasured dreams. Our dreams can never be crushed. Recognize that it is only our spirit that feels crushed, but it is perfectly resilient, it can bounce back at our command.

Shatterproof your dream

A dream dropped is easily shattered.

I like to see a dream as a beautiful, yet delicate vase of ancient origin. A one of a kind production with unique attributes of great value. One that contains a priceless jewel that the world has yet to see. Too often people treat their unique dreams as common and valueless. It appears as if they picked their dream up off a trash heap. They look at the unpolished diamond and think it is simply another common stone that lines the road of failure. They do not see its innate value. This delicate vase is easily shattered by feelings of unworthiness, thoughts of impossibility, negative chatter or criticism. The key to shatterproof your dream is to find five good reasons why the dream is important to you. Every time something causes your vase to slip or be dropped, these reasons will cause it to bounce right back and not shatter.

Understand your dream

Understanding the interpretation of a dream is vital to carrying it full term.

If you have a dream with no purpose or meaning, any challenge is big enough to derail it. You will be blown by the winds of circumstance and dashed by the waves of the storms of life. One day you will be heading east, the next day west. Some days the north will look good and others the south will be tempting. You may find that you feel like you change your mind as often as your underwear. A dream for self-gratification is often an empty dream with little or no sustenance to reach its full potential. A dream that is for other people will always involve other people. It will gain momentum and grow rapidly as it progresses up the hill to its peak. Dig deep. Seek to understand. Know the why of your dream. If you do, you will be able to endure any how. Filter the best dreams from the rest of your dreams.

Invest in your dream

A dream produces fruit to sustain itself first and then to feed you.

I do not know of a fruit farmer who picks the fruit from a tree in its first few years of growth to eat or sell. He allows the fruit to fall at the base of the tree and rot so that it nourishes the roots and strengthens it. It is only when the tree is mature that he will begin to harvest. Too often people plant incredible dream seed only to pick the fruit of their dream prematurely. It is so easy to fall into this trap. Some even eat the plant itself before it has had time to bare its first fruits. If this does not kill their dream, it has the effect of keeping it stunted; it appears as a bonsai, just never reaching its full potential. We need to keep from being tempted to rob our dream of the fruit that sustains its development. Some of the fruit must be reinvested to sustain growth. Give your dream the best opportunity to become what it was born to be.

Investigate your dream

Know your dream inside and out as it will be tested.

No worthwhile dream will be given to someone who is unworthy. Your ability to hold onto your dream will be tested. The big question your dream seems to want answered is ‘can you be trusted to carry me to fruition?’ You and your dream need to become one. People will one day describe or refer to you by your dream, they will become synonymous. Study your dream. Learn as much as you can about it. Find out what it contains that ignites your passion. Grab onto those characteristics that excite you. Look for the value that it will add to your family, community, country or continent. All worthwhile dreams have a lasting and significant impact that traverses the sands of time. Their ripples impact generations. Living dreams always give life to other dreams, igniting hope wherever they go. Does yours?

Ignite your dream

Fan the flames of passion into a fire of desire.

Your dream will always be born out of passion. There will be something in your dream that you are passionate about. Something that gives it meaning, that resonates with your life purpose. Some dreams might be solutions to problems, others might meet a need. Some perhaps are emotionally driven or address fear. But all will have a link to a particular state that ignites passion and excitement in your heart. Something that will energize you adequately to persist through trials and tribulation in order to see it become a reality. These very trials and tests you face will strengthen your resolve to protect your dream. Just like the membrane appears as an obstacle to the s***m when it arrives to fertilize the egg it is also the very thing that protects the egg from the second s***m and the other 6 million on their way.

Love your dream

A loved dream is a wanted and cared for dream.

When we love something, we talk about it, care for it and protect it. The more we talk about our dream, the more we reinforce it. As our dream is shared with others, we become more articulate at presenting it and also move it from the realm of the impossible towards the possible. We need to be careful though as a shared dream is also one that is open to criticism. To protect our dream, we need to share it with people who are natural encouragers. Especially in the early stages. If we shout our mouth off to any Tom, Dick or Harry, we could have a swimming pool of ice water tossed our way. Jealousy can often extinguish a newly ignited dream before it becomes a raging fire. The ridicule can even come from the most unexpected sources, your loved ones. In an attempt to keep you from being hurt, they may attack your dream.

Own your dream

Your dream is your most prized possession. Own it.

The currency of the future is dreams. Your future is as bright as the dreams you have. Without a dream, there is no real purpose to life. The ability to dream separates us from the animal kingdom. The ability to dream is evidence that we did not crawl out of some primordial soup and follow a path of evolution. Dreams are a glimpse of our potential. Dreams are the keys that open doors to a world of opportunity. Who said dreams should be limited? Dreamers are possibility thinkers. They are undeterred by past achievements of man. They act as though that what does not yet exist will exist at the right time for the fulfillment of their dream. They own their dream and hold onto it, tightly. If someone tries to steel it, they quickly tell them where to go with their negative talk. They tune into the ‘I CAN’ talk show channel.
