Unpopular truth that most people ignore: If you really want to learn a language you have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations. You have to be brave. You have to become okay with appearing stupid. You have accept people's laughter. You have to remain objective. You have to be humble. You have to try new things that push you far out of where you normally keep yourself.

Here's a short vocabulary exercise for you to do. Take the opportunity. Do the exercise. Learn some new words. I don't care if you make mistakes and you shouldn't care either. Anyone who makes you feel bad about making mistakes while learning is not worth your time πŸ’―!

Very interesting... that's interesting... it was interesting... 🀯

We need to stop using the word 'interesting' to describe everything! We are all guilty of doing this, myself included. It's easy, it rolls off the tongue, it's impossible to misinterpret. While all this is true, it's also basic, lazy, safe and painfully general.

I've spoken about the power of adjectives before and I'm going to remind you again: adjectives are the powerhouse of language and fluency! Your range of expression is greatly impacted by your knowledge, use and application of adjectives.

So, give this post a read and be sure to check out the tip for learning new vocabulary on the last slide 🀍

Why not work on two things at the same time? Improve your vocabulary range AND your confidence to express that you don't understand something.

Misunderstanding or not comprehending information is nothing to be ashamed of! If you allow yourself to be consumed by fear, judgment or shame, you will not improve your English.

If anyone makes you feel embarrassed or insecure because you do not understand something, that person does not deserve a second more of your attention or consideration.

There are plenty of people who will happily help you to understand something new, even if they have to repeat it 1000 times in 1000 different ways for you πŸ™ƒ Trust me, I know, I am one of those people ❀

Remember, you are attempting to learn English as an additional language. That doesn't make you embarrassing, that makes you ambitious and brave! 😁

Okay so this is my second time posting this because the first one had an autocorrect spelling mistake. So... let's try this again... Apologies to those who had commented. Please feel free to comment again with a new sentence if you wish 😊

One of my sweet followers messaged me and requested an explanation of this idiom: to be all choked up

The pronunciation of the 'O' in 'choked' is the same as when you say the word 'oh'. It is not pronounced like the 'O' in 'orange'. In other words, it is pronounced with the full vowel sound.

All of my followers are always welcome to private message me and request posts, videos or explanations about any part of English. My page is for you, so you have a say about what content goes on my feed.

Have a beautiful Friday everyone. See you on Monday πŸ₯°

Break This Habit if You Want to be Fluent in English

"Of course, making mistakes is not comfortable for anyone. However, students need to realise and accept that trying to avoid the discomfort of making mistakes is detrimental to your learning. I would say it is the second biggest hindrance to education, the first being lack of engagement."

Follow the link below to read my latest blog on why making mistakes is an integral part of learning.

"Ashleigh, I have this frustrating problem, I forget my words when I speak!"

Yes, I know. I sympathise with your feelings about this πŸ’› It is terribly annoying and makes your motivation crumble. All at once you feel embarrassed, silly, angry and defeated. If I tell you that this experience is completely normal for all foreign language learners (which it is!) it doesn't really help you solve the problem.

However, there are strategies to help you in moments when your words fail you. Read through these few suggestions I have given you in the post. Hopefully, the next time you find yourself *lost for words* you will be kind to yourself, take a deep breath and try one of these creative suggestions.

*To be lost for words means = to be unable to find the words to express yourself, usually due to shock or any other strong emotion

Some teachers will tell you to STOP using these 3 common English words. I don't agree with that approach. It makes learning militant and restrictive. I want you to be comfortable, creative and free because those are the most nurturing conditions for your brain to absorb new information.

Instead I will encourage you to experiment with the alternatives I have given for each word. Not only will doing that elevate your expression range, it will also make you feel more spontaneous and fluent - two major desires for all foreign language learners.

Pick a new word and use it in the comments section πŸ‘‡πŸΌ Why should you comment? Because engagement and practice is the best way to memorise new information πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
