The general narrative is that schools without robotics equipment and kits are at a disadvantage in keeping up with 4th industrial revolution (4IR) education trends, therefore The LaGrange Academy hosted their first Computational Thinking Workshop on May 16 at Clarence Primary School (KZN).

We set out to show teachers the importance of computational thinking in the early years and foundation phase and how many of these activities were already being done in school without being labelled “computational thinking”. Although our primary target for the workshop was Foundation Phase Teachers, many grade 7 teachers attended and we demonstrated that before using computers, all ages should use unplugged practices for coding to deliver real building blocks of computer science.

We highlighted the 4-step computational thinking process that can be applied to any problem:

Ø Decomposition

Ø Pattern Recognition

Ø Abstraction

Ø Algorithmic Thinking

All teachers received a resource pack and certificate. We were amazed at the overwhelming positive feedback from teachers of all grades (1-7) and happy to know that teachers were going back to their classrooms with resources they could implement immediately!
