🎹 The story behind Welcome to Piano Town 📚✨
Meet the seven friends who live in Piano Town:
🐱 Cat-C
🐶 Doggy-D
👦 Eddy-E
🚪 Front Door-F
👵 Granny-G
👧 Anna-A
🚪 Back Door-B
They may look like storybook characters, but each of them has a very particular job to do.
Lalla’s Music Adventures: Welcome to Piano Town began with a question:
What if a very young child could discover the piano keyboard as a place to explore before being asked to memorise a collection of note names?
At first glance, a piano keyboard can look like a long row of identical black and white keys. But it contains a wonderfully reliable pattern: groups of two and three black keys repeating all the way along the keyboard.
That pattern became the geography of Piano Town.
The group of two black keys becomes the Little House, where children meet:
Cat-C — C before the two black keys
Doggy-D — D between them
Eddy-E — E after them
The group of three black keys becomes the Big House, where they meet:
Front Door-F — F before the three black keys
Granny-G — G between the first and second
Anna-A — A between the second and third
Back Door-B — B after them
Instead of beginning with “This is C. Remember it,” the child begins to build a little musical world:
find the house → find the friend → find the key.
Lalla, our young explorer with her golden key, leads the child through that world. Along the way, the learner listens, looks, moves, searches, plays and begins recognising the repeating structure of the keyboard.
There is deliberately no staff notation in Book 1.
Before asking a young beginner to translate musical symbols, I wanted them to develop a sense of keyboard geography—to know where they are, what patterns they can see, and how the seven white-key names fit into that repeating landscape.
The story therefore carries the learning.
The characters give the notes something memorable to attach to.
And the piano itself becomes a place the child can explore with curiosity rather than something they need to “get right” immediately.
By the end of the adventure, the seven friends are no longer seven unrelated letter names.
They belong to a pattern.
They belong to Piano Town.
And, hopefully, they begin to belong in the child’s musical imagination too. 💜🎶
