Please, please read.
3 years ago I wrote a very personal prose piece titled The Morning After I Killed Myself, about a young woman who commits su***de and looks back on the impact it has on her family and friends and ends up regretting her decision.
I posted it on my writing blog 3 years ago and it went viral, shared over 300,000 times on my blog and almost a million times on Imgur/Reddit.
So many people have told me it's saved their lives.
But I almost wish I hadn't written it. Because, despite all the good it managed to do, it's been plagiarized over a hundred times, probably several hundred.
I've seen dozens of cases of it being stolen and retitled with someone else's name as the author, cases of it being published in someone else's book under their name, cases of it being used as song lyrics by a band who claims they wrote it, cases of it being posted nearly ten times on the same website alone and because the website is so enormous they didn't catch each instance of plagiarism...
Once a girl based her senior art thesis off of my piece...only she accidentally based it off of a plagiarized version of my piece and had no idea. She called me, a complete stranger, in tears, begging me to forgive her for something that was not her fault at all, but the fault of the person who plagiarized me. She had to redo portions of the thesis she worked so hard on.
I've had cases of it being submitted to writing contests under other peoples' names and them winning awards for it. One girl submitted it to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and won a gold key for it, coincidentally the same contest I submitted some of my work to in high school and won awards for. What was her excuse? She said she read the piece awhile ago, liked it so much that she saved it to her computer, and when the time came to submit to the contest, she "forgot she hadn't written it" and sent it in under her name.
I had a case of a stranger who posted it on their blog under their name and when I asked them, politely, to provide me with credit and remove their name, they claimed they'd "written the piece 10 years ago in their private journal and that I was the one who plagiarized them."
I've had cases of people messaging my writing blog and accusing me of plagiarism...of my own piece, because they saw plagiarized versions of it going viral and had no idea I was the original author.
And finally, a few weeks ago, a girl submitted it to a contest under her name and won $100 for it. Now she's apparently denying plagiarism.
This piece of mine was intended to help people. It's a very very personal piece and always will be. I'm glad it's helped so many people. But something that is so personal and painful for me has been twisted and manipulated and stolen and published for profit and taken away from me so many times I've lost count.
I don't care about money. But when I saw this girl win R10000 for a piece about su***de that I wrote, that is the last straw.
Please, for the love of god, don't steal from artists and writers. Don't steal something and claim you wrote it. Write and create your own work. If you see a piece of art or writing floating around with no source or a mis-attributed source, tell the original author. Spread the word. Don't share artworks without sources on them.
You might think that it's not a big deal, that it doesn't matter, that it only happened once.
But it happens all the time. All the time. This is exhausting and artists deserve credit. They deserve respect.
I've considered deleting the writing blog I've had for 5 years because of how often this piece is plagiarized.
Don't let it get to that point, where someone considers getting rid of something they love because it's hardly theirs anymore.

WHOEVER WROTE THIS
SHOULD BE GIVEN AN
AWARD!!!
I AM A WOMAN!!!
So what?
I get into an argument
with a man, he slaps me,
I feel the pain, yet they
tell me I provoked him. I
should have been quiet, I
should have been patient.
I should apologize to him.
I get into an argument
with a man, I slap him,
they tell me I have no
respect, no home
training. I should have
been quiet, I should have
been patient. I should
apologize to him.
Because I am a woman, I
don't have a right to be
angry. So, the degree of
my innocence is directly
proportional to the
degree of my silence in
the face of oppression
and brutality.....
Because I am a woman,
my husband cheats on
me, I am told to tolerate it
to save my marriage. The
barbaric and stupid
excuse is that ''it is in
their nature to cheat, I
should slim down, dress
better, cook better, pray
harder and be more
pleasant to him"
I cheat, and I am called a
w***e, I have committed
an abomination, I have no
right to look elsewhere
for the love and
emotional support I lack
at home, I am an
irresponsible mother.
So I am sent packing,
from the home we both
built, with all my earthly
possessions stuffed into
a tiny box on my head. I
am henceforth forbidden
from seeing my two older
children, I'm lucky to be
allowed to go with my
little one still suckling on
my left breast. Three
years later, the little one
is tagged a bastard. Now,
my new name is "after-
three", because I am a
woman.
He is 28 and runs a
company. He's tagged
wonderful, hardworking,
focused, career oriented,
successful at a very
young age.
I am 28 and I run a
company "Hmmmm....
she is not even married,
unserious, can not order
her priorities right, a
hustler, loves money, let
her go and get a husband
oh"
And I wonder if being
successful has anything
to do with a person's
gender.
Because I am a woman,
I am not allowed to have
wits or be a prodigy, I
cannot be financially
buoyant, professionally
successful or be treated
with respect without a
man beside me.
Then I am tagged a
generous leg opener, "a
runs girl". They never see
the possibility that I
actually had to go
through ups and downs
to get to where I am,
because I am a woman.
A man looses his wife to
death and remarries a
year after, he did the right
thing, he's being praised
and congratulated for
moving on, after all life is
for the living.
A woman looses her
husband to death and
remarries after 4yrs,
"aaah! so early? Are u
sure she wasn't sleeping
with that man even when
her husband was alive?
That was why she killed
her husband. She's a
witch! Because she's a
woman.
Because I am a woman,
this post will be
considered controversial,
and everyone will try to
correct me. But don't
forget, that I am a woman
and it does not make me
less human!!!
Share to respect some
woman and Tell your
woman that you love
her
: *Who is a
woman?????*
When she is quiet,
millions of things are
running through her
mind. When she stares at
you, she is wondering
why she loves you so
much in spite of being
taken for granted. When
she says I will stand by
you, she will stand by you
like a solid rock. Never
hurt her or take her for
granted. A very heart
touching message by a
woman. Someone asked
her, Are you a working
woman or a housewife?
She replied: Yes, I am a
full-time working
housewife. I work 24
hours a day. I'm a Mum.
I'm a Wife. I'm a
Daughter. I'm a Daughter-
in-law. I'm an Alarm
clock. I'm a Cook. I'm a
Maid. I'm a Teacher. I'm a
Waitress. I'm a Nanny.
I'm a Nurse. I'm a
Handywoman. I'm a
Security officer. I'm a
Counsellor. I'm a
Comforter. I don't get
holidays. I don't get sick
leave. I don't get day off. I
work through day and
night. I'm on call all hours
and get paid with a
sentence. "What Do U Do
All Day??" This Is
Dedicated to all
women*** A Woman has
the most unique
character like salt! Her
presence is never
remembered, but her
absence makes all the
things tasteless. Pass it
to all the lovely ladies...Ur
Mother. Ur Wife. Ur
daughter. Ur sister & Ur
friend.

to make her smile and to
every man to make him
realize a woman's worth.

Scroll Number 5 by Og Mandino

I am nature's greatest miracle.Although I am of the animal kingdom
animal rewards
alone will not satisfy me.
Within me burns a flame which
has been passed from generations
uncounted and its heat
is a constant irritation to my sprit to become better than I
am and I will.
I will fan this flame of dissatisfaction and
proclaim my uniqueness to the world.
None can duplicate my brush strokes,
none can make my
chisel marks,
none can duplicate my handwriting
, none
can produce my child, and, in truth, none has the ability
to sell exactly as I.
Henceforth, I will capitalize on this
difference for it is an asset to be promoted to the fullest
I am nature's greatest miracle.
Vain attempts to imitate others no longer will I make.
Instead i will place my uniqueness on display in the
market place.
I will proclaim it, yea, I will sell it. I will
begin now to accent my differences;
hide my similarities.
So too will I apply this principle to the goods I sell.
Salesman and goods, different from all others, and proud
of the difference.
I am unique creature of nature.
I am rare, and there is value in all rarity

A Beautiful Poem by Maya Angelou

.
WHEN I SAY I AM A CHRISTIAN
When I say that 'I am a Christian', I am not shouting that 'I am clean living. I'm whispering 'I was lost, but now I'm found and forgiven.'
When I say 'I am a Christian', I don't speak of this with pride. I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.
When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not trying to be strong. I'm professing that I'm weak and need His strength to carry on.
When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not bragging of success. I'm admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess.
When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not claiming to be perfect. My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it.
When I say 'I am a Christian', I still feel the sting of pain. I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.
When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not holier than thou, I'm just a simple sinner who received God's good grace, somehow!"

SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY
BIKO’S SASO AND BCM CHALLENGED APARTHEID IN DANGEROUS TIMES
Steve Biko is one of the main figures who, together with Strinivasa “Strini” Moodley and Onkgopotse Tiro, founded the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa.
“Strini” subsequently spent six years in Robben Island for his revolutionary activities. And Tiro was killed by a letter bomb sent by apartheid killer Craig Williamson while exiled in Botswana.
In the minds of many people in our country today the Black Consciousness Movement to which Steve Biko, Onkgopotse Tiro, Mapetla Mohapi, Muntu kaMyeza and Mthuli kaShezi belonged, among many others, is not given credit for its contributions to our liberation.
Biko developed the view that to avoid white domination, black people had to organise independently, and to this end he became a leading figure in the creation of the South African Students' Organisation (SASO) in 1968.
It organized Black Community Programmes (BCPs) and focused on the psychological empowerment of black people. Biko believed that black people needed to rid themselves of any sense of racial inferiority, an idea he expressed by popularizing the slogan "black is beautiful".
In 1972, he was involved in founding the Black People's Convention (BPC) to promote Black Consciousness ideas among the wider population. The government came to see Biko as a subversive threat and placed him under a banning order in 1973, severely restricting his activities. He remained politically active, helping organise BCPs such as a healthcare centre and a crèche in the Ginsberg area. During his ban he received repeated anonymous threats, and was detained by state security services on several occasions.
My high school generation in the early 1970’s and later the Class of 1976 we’re heavily influenced by our teacher Tiro and the BCM.
South Africa owes a debt of gratitude to Biko’s SASO and BCM who courageously challenged the apartheid regime and paid with their lives.

‘‘There once was a boy named Pierre who only would say, ‘I don’t care!’ Read his story, my friend, for you’ll find at the end that a suitable moral that lies there.”

Truth
Sticks and stones my break my bones, but words can hurt me.
Sticks and stones breaks only my bone and bruises my skin,
Words are ghosts that haunt me.
Sideways and curved the word-swords fall to pieces and stick inside me.
Bricks and stones my be painful through my bones but words can make me feel embarrassed or ashamed.
Pain from words has left scars on my mind and heart that softly and easily hurts.
Cuts and bruises now have healed,
Its only words that I remember...scar that I have on my heart and mind that left me empty

A Suitcase
A man died. When he realized it, he
saw God coming closer to him
with a suitcase in his hand.
God : All right. it is time to go.
Man : (Surprised) Now? So soon? I had
a lot of plans...
God : But it is time to go now.
Man : What do you have in that
suitcase?
God : Your belongings.
Man : My belongings? you mean my
things, my clothes, my money?
God : Those things are not yours. They
belonged to the earth.
Man : Are they my memories?
God : Memories dont belong to you.
They belonged to Time.
Man : Are they my talents?
God : Talents are not yours. They
belonged to the circumstances.
Man : Are they my friends and family?
God : They are not yours. They
belonged to the path.
Man : Are they my wife and son?
God : They are not yours. They
belonged to your heart.
Man : Is it my body?
God : Your body is not yours. It belongs
to the dust.
Man : Is it my soul?
God : Your soul is not yours. That is
mine.
Full of fear, the man took the suitcase
from god and opened it
and found out the suitcase was empty.
Tears come down his
cheek.
Man : Don't I have anything???
God : Nothing. Now you don't have
anything.
Every moment you lived was only
yours. Now you have nothing.
Life is just a moment. This moment
belongs to you. Enjoy this time
while you have it. Forget bad
yesterdays. Don't have fear for unborn
tomorrows. Don't hate people whom
you don't like. Hatred spoils your
mood, happiness and health. Forgive
them and forget them. Always
try to be happy. Don't allow yourself to
worry about anything. Always
search different ways to be happy and
be happy...................
Belongings (noun) = things you have ;
property
Hatred (noun) = a very strong dislike
for somebody/something
