Most students study the night before an exam completely wrong.
They highlight. They re-read their notes. They flip through flashcards passively.
And then they walk into the exam confused about why nothing came back.
Here's what cognitive science actually says.
A massive review of study techniques by John Dunlosky found that highlighting, re-reading, and summarising are all rated low utility. They feel productive but produce almost no real learning.
Why? Because they build recognition, not recall. Exams test recall. You've been training for the wrong event your whole life.
The fix is one method called retrieval practice. Close your notes. Write down everything you remember on a blank page. Check the gaps. Repeat.
One study found students who tested themselves three times remembered significantly more a week later than students who read the material four times.
Same material. Less reading. Better results.
I broke down the full brain science playbook in my new ebook 'What Nobody Taught You About Studying' and the memory side of it in 'The Memory Reset.' Both are linked in the comments.
Watch the video below for the 60 second version. Tag a student who needs this before their next exam.

Here's a fact that genuinely changed how I see learning:
Your brain is not a fixed object. Every time you learn something new, a word, a song, a skill, neurons in your brain fire and form new connections. When those connections are used repeatedly, a fatty substance called myelin wraps around the pathway and makes it faster.
This is called neuroplasticity. And it happens at any age.
It means the student who is "bad at maths" right now isn't a student with a maths-deficient brain. It's a student whose maths pathways haven't been built yet. That's a temporary state.
The brain you have today is not the brain you're stuck with.
Pass this along to anyone who needs the reminder.

Something I've been thinking about lately.
So many students — and adults — walk around carrying this quiet belief that they're "just not smart enough." They were told this, in small ways, year after year.
But I've spent a lot of time looking at what the research actually says about how the brain learns, and the truth is far kinder than that. Most people were never shown how learning actually works. Not once. Not in school. Not at home.
You weren't left behind. You were left unbriefed.
There's a difference.
If you've ever felt that way about yourself, or a child, or a student you care about — I hope this lands with you.
