No blue plug, no power at your tent.

The campsite runs off 3 power stations, roughly 25 m apart, with 6 plug points each. They’re blue 16A caravan sockets, so a normal plug won’t go in. You’ll need a blue 16A caravan plug adaptor. We no longer supply them, so pick one up at any camping, caravan or hardware store before Friday.

Your power kit: the adaptor, an extension cord to reach your tent (the longer it is, the more choice you have where to pitch) and a multi-plug on the end, so others can plug in too. Plug points are shared, not allocated.

Hired a tent? It’s set up for you with mattresses, so just bring your bedding. There’s no power built in, so bring the same power kit. Not hiring? Bring your own tent or caravan and all the sleeping and camping gear you want.

Phones and e-bikes can charge at the dedicated charge stations on site.

And leave the kettle at home. There’s a 24-hour tea point with hot water, and everyone shares the same supply, so go easy on what you plug in.

One week to go. Bringing supporters? Their packages close this Sunday evening.

Here’s how the R622 Trails weekend runs, from Friday arrival to Sunday departure. Swipe through and save it, so it’s on your phone when you need it.

Friday 16 October: arrive from 14:30, registration 15:00 to 20:00, race briefing at 18:00.

Saturday 17 October: Day 1, 55 km. Batch A off at 07:30, Batch B at 07:45. Live music and games after dinner.

Sunday 18 October: Day 2, 45 km. Same start times, lunch from 11:00.

Batches are allocated at registration, so register on Friday if you can. Saturday morning is for riding.

Supporters are welcome to come and watch during the day, but meals and overnight stays are for riders and supporter package holders only. Book supporter packages at r622.co.za/enter before Sunday evening.

1,553m of climbing over two days. Which is another way of saying 1,553m of downhill.

Day 1 is 55km and 869m, and it is really one climb. Houston, We Have A Hill takes 362m out of you over about 8km. Everything before it is a warm up and a fast drop into the valley. Everything after it is Johnny’s Joll, Freestone FO and The Sting, short enough to ride through, and then Home Time down to the finish.

Day 2 is 45km and 684m and a completely different day. Regret Those Drinks in the first 4km, Sappi Down to wake you up, then 15km flat and fast through the middle where the quick guys go hunting. The Last Stretch Hump is where day two is decided, 246m over the final 9.5km on legs that already did day one. Then Last Call, 83m down to the line.

100km, 1,553m of climbing, on private farms and plantations you cannot ride any other weekend.

A lot of races put you in a marquee. Not our race.

The R622 race village is a building. The whole front is glass, looking out over the grass and down to the dam, with canvas sides that roll up in the sun and drop when the weather turns.

Registration happens there. Every meal for the weekend happens there. The bar is there, the 24 hour tea and coffee station is there, and so is prizegiving on Saturday night. One roof, all of it.

The campsite surrounds the building, so wherever you pitch, the hall is in the middle of it. No drive in, no shuttle, no walking back to a car park in the dark.

Ablutions are a permanent block on site. Basins, mirrors, showers.

And whatever the Midlands throws at race weekend, the sides come down and the whole field eats under cover.

Do the second one before the first one. You are not going to be thinking about mountain biking at 19:30 tonight, and you are definitely not thinking about it at 22:00.

There are 18 beds at the race venue, and when they are gone they are gone.

The thatch house sleeps 10 across five rooms, two of them ensuite and the other three sharing a bathroom. It goes as a whole house, R9 000 for the weekend. Get nine mates together and it lands under most places in the Midlands on a race weekend, with the advantage that you are already at the start.

The cottages are R550 per person per night. The two twin cottages have their own bathrooms. The four sleeper has a main bedroom, a bunk room, one bathroom and a full kitchen.

None of this cuts you off from the weekend. The race village is a short walk from your door, and the camp facilities are open to you as well. The food, the beers, the prizegiving, the whole thing is right there. You just get to walk away from it when you have had enough.

All of it is on the farm. No 05:00 drive, no packing a wet tent on Sunday, no hunting for parking. You walk to the start and you walk back to your own room.

Meals in the race village are included if you are an entered rider or on a supporter package.

Enter before then and you ride R622 MTB Trails for R2 150. From Sunday the price goes to R2 950.

R622 is a two-day mountain bike stage race on Oaksprings Farm in the KZN Midlands, 16 to 18 October. Day one is 60km, day two is 50km, and 40km of the 110km is singletrack. It runs across private farms, forests and wetlands that are closed to riding the rest of the year.

Your entry includes the race village with camping and facilities, all meals for the weekend, a goodie bag, a 24 hour tea and coffee station, medics on course and two water points each day. Supporters are R1 800 for adults and R1 100 for children under 12, with the same village, food and facilities.

Early bird entries are limited and they close Saturday.
