Cape Town, lace up for a good cause! ❤️

On Sunday, 27 September, the African Research Society is hosting a 5km and 10km Run for St Joseph’s Children’s Hospital along the Mouille Point Promenade.

Whether you're chasing a new 10km PB, taking on the 5km, or simply joining for a morning out on the Promenade, every entry will help support the children in our care.

Every story has a beginning. Ours started with 11 beds and a veranda ❤️

In 1935, five Pallottine Missionary Sisters began caring for vulnerable children in Philippi.

With limited resources but a deep commitment to care, a vacant presbytery was transformed into a home for children living with tuberculosis and other serious illnesses. The first ward was simple - a veranda with approximately 11 beds.

By 1941, St Joseph’s was caring for around 120 children.

More than 90 years later, much has changed. But the commitment to giving children the care and support they need has continued across generations.

This Heritage Month, we're opening our archives and sharing some of the people, places and moments that have shaped the St Joseph’s story.

For generations, St Joseph’s has been supported by people who believe that every child deserves the opportunity to heal, recover and return home.

From our earliest days to the care we provide today, donors, partners, volunteers and our wider community have helped make our work possible. While St Joseph’s has changed and grown over the years, that spirit of generosity has remained part of who we are.

This International Day of Charity, as we celebrate A Heritage of Care, we recognise every person who has contributed to our journey - past and present.

Our story began in 1935. More than 90 years later, that story continues.

This Heritage Month, we’re celebrating A Heritage of Care - looking back at the people, moments and milestones that have shaped St Joseph’s across generations.

From our beginnings in Philippi, where five Pallottine Missionary Sisters began caring for vulnerable children, to the Children’s Hospital we are today, much has changed over the decades. But at the heart of St Joseph’s, our commitment to caring for children has remained.

Throughout September, we’ll open our archives, revisit defining moments in our history and hear from people who have been part of the St Joseph’s journey.

Because our heritage isn't only about where we've come from. It's about the legacy of care we continue to carry forward.

Throughout Women's Month, we've shared the stories of some of the remarkable women behind recovery at St Joseph's.

From those providing care and therapy to those working behind the scenes, each plays a different role in helping our children move forward.

As our CEO, Christelle Cornelius, reflects: “Every child has one journey, supported by one team.”

Sometimes, you get to see the journey come full circle 💜

For Roleen, one of our drivers at St Joseph's, her role is about much more than getting children from one place to another. She transports children to and from their hospital appointments, sharing a small part of their recovery journey along the way.

This Women's Month, we celebrate Roleen and the women whose contributions help keep every child's journey moving forward. 💜

Recovery looks different for every child 💜

For Amy, physiotherapist at St Joseph's, recovery may begin with movement - helping a child reach a milestone, become more mobile, walk or use a wheelchair.

But working as part of a multidisciplinary team has shown her that recovery is so much more.

It's growing.
Eating.
Communicating.
Moving.
Returning to a safe environment.

And sometimes, recovery means providing a child receiving palliative care with a safe space where they are held, loved and never alone.

This Women's Month, we celebrate Amy and the women who remind us that there is no single definition of progress.

Every child's journey is different. And every journey deserves care 💜

Sometimes, care looks like the smallest act 💜

For Esmeralda and the Laundry Team at St Joseph's, every load of washing is about more than clean clothes.

It's finding something a child has been looking for and seeing the smile on their face. It's stopping in the ward to ask how their day is going. It's giving a hug. And sometimes, it's simply saying, “Yes, Auntie will do it for you.”

Behind the scenes, Esmeralda and her team collect, wash, sort, fold and iron laundry from six wards every day - and they do it, as she says, with “great joy and happiness.”

This Women's Month, we're celebrating the women whose care reaches our children in ways big and small.

Thank you, Esmeralda, for reminding us that every act of care matters.

Some parts of caring for children are never seen 💜

For Vania, Head of Therapy, the work goes far beyond rehabilitation. It's celebrating every breakthrough, sharing in the difficult moments, fighting for what each child needs and growing deeply attached to the children along the way.

They become, as Vania so beautifully describes them, “our heart children.”

And that is what helping a child recover means to her: restoring confidence and dignity, improving quality of life and giving both children and their families hope.

This Women's Month, we celebrate Vania and the incredible heart she brings to every child's journey.
