Can we just talk about how tired childcare providers actually are?

Not “I stayed up too late watching Netflix” tired.

I mean…

Constant noise.
Constant movement.
Constant responsibility.
Constant being “on.”

And then someone says, “Oh you just play with kids all day.
you don’t just play.

You regulate emotions.
You teach life skills.
You catch fevers that parents call “teething.”
You juggle group care when someone expects one on one.
You clean up messes no one sees.
You carry the emotional weight of tiny humans who aren’t even yours.

And you still go home feeling like you didn’t do enough.

You are not crazy for feeling burned out sometimes.

This job is beautiful.
And it is hard.
Both can be true.

If no one told you lately… what you do matters. Even on the days you question everything.

And if today feels heavy, just focus on keeping everyone safe and fed.

That is more than enough. 💜

What if we let children be children again?

Not miniature adults.
Not data points.
Not performance scores.
Not social media highlights.

Children.

What if we gave them time to:

Build forts instead of resumes.
Climb trees instead of chasing rankings.
Argue, fall out, make up, and learn how to handle it.
Be bored long enough to invent something.

What if we stopped rushing them toward outcomes
and focused on foundations?

Because childhood is not a rehearsal for productivity.

It is where emotional muscles are built.

Resilience is built when they lose a game
and no one rewrites the rules.

Patience is built when they have to wait.

Confidence is built when they solve a problem
without an adult stepping in too soon.

We worry about acceleration.

But development is not a race.

A child who feels safe, capable, and grounded
will learn.

A child who feels constantly measured
may learn to perform,
but not to love learning.

Let them play.

Let them struggle.

Let them explore.

Let them be loud sometimes.
Let them be messy.
Let them be bored.

Because one day, expectations will arrive.

Deadlines will arrive.

Pressure will arrive.

Adulthood will arrive.

It does not need an early invitation.

Childhood deserves protection.

And protecting it is our responsibility.

What if we stopped asking children to grow up faster,
and started asking ourselves
why we are in such a hurry?

😡 TEACHERS ARE EXPECTED TO SHUT UP

Teaching didn’t just get harder.
It taught teachers when to keep their mouths closed.

Too much got normalized.

Not because it was reasonable.
Because speaking up had consequences.

Being told to document everything but never be backed.
Being blamed for behavior you weren’t allowed to address.
Being expected to tolerate disrespect from students and parents because “don’t escalate it.”

Getting cursed at.
Threatened.
Undermined.

And being told to stay calm.
Build rapport.
Handle it better next time.

Evaluations tied to things completely out of a teacher’s control.
Test scores.
Attendance.
Behaviors admin refused to touch but still expected fixed.

All while carrying instruction, paperwork, trauma, compliance, and liability like it was one role.

Teachers learned when to stay quiet.
They learned which questions made leadership defensive.
They learned that pushing too hard meant being labeled the problem.

And then one day a new teacher asked,
“Is this normal?”

And the answer came out automatically.

“Yeah. That’s just how it is.”

That’s the moment the system locks in.

Because none of this is normal.
It’s just been enforced long enough to feel permanent.

Teaching doesn’t fall apart because teachers don’t care.
It falls apart because care gets exploited.

The guilt.
The pressure.
The constant reminder that kids need you, so you should tolerate less safety, less dignity, and less voice.

That isn’t dedication.
That’s conditioning.

I didn’t realize how quiet I’d become until I left and stopped bracing every time I spoke honestly.
No more calculating tone.
No more choosing words to stay “safe.”

That’s when the anger showed up.

Not at kids.
Not at teachers.

At a system that only functions when teachers learn to shut up.

Signed,
A former teacher who left after getting tired of being silenced
