With change comes growth, the 2026 ECD Indaba, we were hoping to see meaningful growth within the ECD sector especially when it comes to inclusion.
Our school believes that both neurotypical children and children who are differently abled deserve equal recognition, support, and opportunities. However, we often feel that children who are neurodivergent are being overlooked when it comes to ECD programmes, policies, and support initiatives.
Early intervention is critical. Our children need access to the correct support and services from a young age to help them reach their full potential. Yet, financially, it is extremely challenging to sustain a school that caters specifically to the needs of neurodivergent children. As an inclusive school, we want to do more, provide more, and reach more families but this requires adequate resources and financial support.
The Indaba was a blessing, and we appreciate the opportunity to be part of the conversation. However, we would have loved to see inclusion more visibly represented. When the logo was displayed for voting, there were no illustrations or representations of children with special needs. Every child in the design appeared perfectly typical, but an important piece of the puzzle was missing our differently abled and neurodiverse children.
If we truly stand for inclusion, it must be visible, intentional, and reflected in every aspect of the ECD sector. Inclusion is not an afterthought; it starts at ECD level. We call on government and stakeholders to ensure that support, funding, policies, and representation include all children, especially those who are neurodivergent and differently abled.
**True inclusion begins when every child is seen, valued, and represented.**
