The division has a large membership base, and the academic and skills level is abundant amongst the members. It ranges throughout the spectrum of requirements for the water sector to produce, and operate in our country. We are fortunate to have many tools within the organization of relaying knowledge within the spectrum of skills sets, by means of the SAICE academic publications and research, on l

ine technical and non-technical courses, sit in courses and presentations, conferences, noteworthy project site visits, e-online learning programs and joint peer to peer knowledge relay initiatives. Our contribution to the upskilling of our sector of people is of high importance to us. The division believes in inspiring the youth to take interest and participate in the water sector and therefore we endorse competitions, and contributions from the younger water peers that are at high school and tertiary level. “Equilibrium” is a competition for high school leaners, and it supports the cultivation of young minds, by providing a platform for them to display their engineering skills. Similarly the division endorses academic development by endorsing research content submitted by tertiary students as well as subsidizing fees. We ensure that diversity is practiced in the industry, as it is the key to development in South Africa. The division has been firm in its stance to improve the level of equality for all its members and non-member alike. The division endorses the view of a diverse skilled workforce of which will propel the industry forward. The influence of new views on technological advancements, policy change, changes in business perceptions due to Covid 19, and a number of areas of sector advancement, is continually addressed within our organisation. The SAICE Water Engineering Division has contributed to a number of publications that served to inform, advise and assist the public sector, on a national and local government level, for strategy and decision making in the sector. The contributions were within the SAICE Infrastructure Report Card, advisory contribution to the Cape Town Day Zero plan, Department of Water and Sanitation Master Plan, research submission to the Water Research Commission, and high-level contributions to infrastructure planning for many large scheme projects. In the next edition of our series, we’re proud to introduce Abri Vermeulen, Treasurer of the SAICE Water Engineering Division.

With an impressive 35 years of experience, Abri brings deep expertise in the operation, maintenance and asset management of water and sanitation infrastructure systems, as well as feasibility studies and master planning, among many other areas.

“Being part of the SAICE WED committee allows me to give back to the water engineering profession and sector,” says Abri - a commitment that truly reflects his passion for the industry.

Introducing Phuti Kgaditsi, Vice Chairperson of the SAICE Water Engineering Division.

With 15 years of experience, Phuti brings extensive expertise in bulk water supply, municipal services, and project management. Her passion for civil engineering - especially water engineering - drives her commitment to making a meaningful impact in communities, while also championing the representation of women in technical fields.

“I want to play a role in resolving our water and sanitation challenges, not just technically but also through influencing policy creation in the sector to ensure sustainability of the resource and the environment. I would also like to foster environments which will not only attract but also retain the women we have in the sector.”

You are invited to attend the SAICE Water Engineering Division Sustainable (urban drainage) Infrastructure and Climate Resilience webinar – 23 March 2026 at 16h00.

This talk presents an overview of how South African cities can utilise stormwater management infrastructure to mitigate urban heat. The core message is that Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) can be a multi-functional solution, simultaneously managing flood risk and mitigating the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. However, the success depends on context-specific strategies, proper planning, and a strong focus on greening the urban environment.

In summary, the talk would argue that integrating urban heat mitigation into sustainable drainage and climate resilience planning is not just an environmental necessity but a social one with shared spaces in the urban typology. By leveraging multi-functional green infrastructure, South African cities can become cooler, liveable and socially inclusive urban areas.
