When your childโ€™s behaviour pushes your buttons, itโ€™s worth getting curious about why that particular behaviour feels so hard for you.

Maybe you werenโ€™t allowed to say no as a child.
Maybe big emotions werenโ€™t tolerated.
Maybe you learned that being a โ€œgoodโ€ child meant being quiet and compliant.
Maybe being ignored feels disrespectful.
Maybe losing control of a situation makes you anxious.

Sometimes we arenโ€™t just responding to what our child is doing.

Weโ€™re responding to what their behaviour brings up in us.

That doesnโ€™t mean we should never feel frustrated, angry or overwhelmed. It means our reactions can give us useful information.

Before asking, โ€œHow do I stop this behaviour?โ€ try asking:

โ€œWhy is this behaviour so triggering for me?โ€
Understanding your child matters.
Understanding yourself does too.

School mornings can feel like a lot before the day has even properly begun โ€” especially for a neurodivergent child who may already be managing transitions, sensory needs, executive functioning demands and anxiety about what lies ahead.

A few small changes can reduce the number of demands their brain has to process first thing. Preparing things the night before, keeping routines predictable, allowing extra transition time and using fewer words when stress is rising can all help make mornings feel more manageable.

It isnโ€™t about creating a โ€œperfectโ€ morning. Itโ€™s about removing some of the pressure points where we can.

If you would like a copy of my BiteSize Guide to Back to School for the Neurodivergent Child, follow the page, like this post and let me know in the comments. All steps must be completed.
