The Executive Mayor of Nkangala District Municipality, Cllr Thomas Ngwenya convened with the Local House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders for the Annual Mayoral Address, bringing together traditional leadership and government to strengthen cooperation in advancing development and improving the lives of communities across the district.
The engagement highlighted the vital role of Amakhosi and traditional leaders in governance and community development, particularly as leaders who remain closest to communities and understand the challenges experienced at the grassroots level. The Executive Mayor, Cllr. TD Ngwenya delivered the 2026/27 State of the District Address under the theme, "The Year of Decisive Action to Fix Local Government and Transform the Economy." Marking the final year of the current local government term, this address focused heavily on accountability, building a lasting legacy, and accelerating service delivery across the district.
Cllr. Ngwenya opened by honouring Women's Month and drawing inspiration from icons like Charlotte Maxeke, acknowledging the courage and sacrifices that laid the foundation for South Africa's democracy.
As the administration enters the final phase of its mandate, the core focus is ensuring that municipalities are left in stable, functional, and financially sound standing. This commitment to good governance guarantees seamless continuity and strong institutional capacity for the future.
The address placed a major emphasis on economic transformation by prioritizing initiatives to unlock local economic potential, drive investment, support local businesses, and create sustainable jobs. Alongside economic growth, the municipality is implementing decisive interventions to enhance the quality and reliability of basic services and strengthen public confidence in local government.
Achieving these goals relies heavily on collective partnerships. The Mayor called for stronger collaboration between government, the private sector, traditional leaders, and communities to drive inclusive growth and overcome regional challenges.
Through responsible leadership and transparency, the administration remains resolutely committed to building a prosperous Nkangala District for all.
