π€§ π¦ H1N1 (Swine Flu) is doing the Rounds! π€π¦
Winter brings cozy blankets, warm drinks... and unfortunately, flu season too! One of the viruses we often see during this time is H1N1 influenza (swine flu). While many children recover without complications, it's important for parents to recognize the symptoms and know when to seek medical attention.
πΆ What is H1N1?
H1N1 is a type of influenza virus that spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, and contaminated hands or surfaces. Children are especially vulnerable because they are often in close contact with others at school, daycare, and playgroups.
π€ Common Symptoms of H1N1 Your child may experience:
π‘οΈ Sudden fever
π· Cough
π€§ Runny or blocked nose
π Sore throat
π€ Headache
πͺ Muscle aches and body pains
π΄ Fatigue and weakness
π½οΈ Poor appetite
π€’ Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (more common in children)
How Can You Help Your Child Feel Better?
βοΈ Encourage plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
βοΈ Ensure they get lots of rest
βοΈ Offer small, frequent meals if appetite is poor βοΈ Use fever medication
βοΈ Provide extra comfort, cuddles, and TLC
π‘οΈ Preventing the Spread
π§Ό Wash hands frequently with soap and water
π€§ Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow
𧴠Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable
π Keep sick children home from school or daycare
π« Avoid close contact with vulnerable individuals such as newborns, elderly family members, and those with chronic illnesses
π¨ Seek Urgent Medical Attention If Your Child Has:
π΄ Difficulty breathing or fast breathing
π΄ Bluish lips or face
π΄ Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, reduced urine output)
π΄ Persistent high fever
π΄ Severe lethargy or difficulty waking
π΄ Seizures
π΄ Symptoms that improve and then suddenly worsen
β Who Is at Higher Risk?
Some children are more likely to develop complications from influenza, including:
β’ Babies and young children β’ Children with asthma or chronic lung disease β’ Children with heart conditions β’ Children with weakened immune systems β’ Children with certain neurological conditions
π Annual flu vaccination remains one of the best ways to reduce the risk of severe influenza illness
