The Department Strengthens Research Partnerships to Advance Evidence-Informed Education Delivery

The Department in collaboration with the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), successfully convened a Colloquium on Strengthening Research Partnerships at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Siyabuswa Campus this morning.

The engagement brought together key stakeholders from government, higher education, research institutions, development organisations and civil society to strengthen collaboration in support of the implementation of the province’s research agenda.

The Research Colloquium provided an important platform for stakeholders to engage with the Department’s strategic priorities and consider how research, evidence and strategic partnerships can contribute to addressing critical challenges confronting the education sector.

Central to the discussions was the need to strengthen the nexus between research, policy and practice, ensuring that knowledge generated through research is relevant, responsive and translated into interventions that improve educational outcomes across the province.

A key focus of the engagement was to provide strategic partners with an opportunity to demonstrate how their respective institutions, research programmes and areas of expertise can contribute to the implementation of the Mpumalanga Provincial Research Agenda Implementation Strategy.

Stakeholders shared their institutional capabilities, areas of expertise, existing research programmes and potential areas of collaboration.

These engagements highlighted opportunities for coordinated research, knowledge generation, capacity development and the systematic application of evidence to inform education policy, planning, implementation and evaluation.

The discussions further emphasised the importance of moving beyond fragmented and isolated research initiatives towards coordinated, demand-driven and policy-relevant research partnerships that respond directly to the Department’s strategic priorities and identified evidence needs.

The Colloquium further sought to:

Identify and consolidate the research priorities of the Mpumalanga Department of Education;

Provide a platform for the Department to articulate key educational challenges requiring evidence-based solutions;

Identify research expertise, programmes and institutional capabilities that can support the Department’s research agenda;

Strengthen research capacity within the education sector;

Promote knowledge exchange among policymakers, researchers, education practitioners and development partners;

Identify opportunities for collaborative research, postgraduate supervision, mentorship, staff development and knowledge generation; and

Strengthen the systematic use of research evidence in education policy, planning, implementation and practice.

The Colloquium was attended by a range of strategic partners, including the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), University of Mpumalanga (UMP), University of South Africa (UNISA), Penreach, and the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT).

Through their presentations and engagements, participating institutions demonstrated the breadth of expertise, knowledge and resources that can be mobilised in support of the Department’s research agenda.

This created a basis for identifying areas of complementarity and establishing more structured, sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships between the Department and research institutions.

The Colloquium further underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and institutional collaboration among the Department, higher education institutions, research organisations, development partners and other education-sector stakeholders.

The engagement marks an important step towards strengthening a coordinated and evidence-informed research ecosystem in Mpumalanga.

As we commemorate National Women’s Day, we honour the courageous women of 1956 who marched to the Union Buildings and declared that women would not be silenced, restricted or relegated to the margins of society.

Their courage remains a powerful reminder that the empowerment of women is inseparable from the transformation of society.

As the Department , we remain committed to building an education system where every child can learn, thrive irrespective of their gender, race or creed.

When our school gates open, doors of opportunity open for all our learners.

Through the delivery of quality education, digital skills, mathematics, science, technology, technical and vocational education, leadership development and pathways to economic participation, we are equally equipping young girls with the knowledge, skills and confidence to shape their own futures and contribute meaningfully to our economy and society.

The theme, “Empowered Women, Empower Nations,” speaks directly to our commitment.

When we empower a girl, we empower a family;women, we strengthen communities.

Let us raise a generation of girls who know that their voices matter, their dreams are valid, their potential is limitless and leadership is their rightful space.

To our mothers, teachers, sisters, daughters, professionals, workers, entrepreneurs and community builders, we salute you.

Happy National Women’s Day! 🇿🇦

Chief Mandinda Early Childhood Development Centre in a New Home

The MEC for Education, Ms. Lindi Masina, officially handed over the brand-new Chief Mandinda Early Childhood Development Centre on Thursday, 06 August 2026 as part of the EXCO Outreach and Premier's Imbizo.

This was a demonstration of opening the doors of education to a brighter future for the children of the community of Mgobodzi and beyond.

This was also showcasing government at work and investing in the future of its people.
Every corner of this new centre has been designed to give young children a safe, happy and inspiring environment where they can learn, play and grow.

Here, little imaginations will flourish, friendships will be formed and
dreams will begin.

These are the early years that shape tomorrow’s leaders, teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs and innovators.

By investing in Early Childhood Development today, government is laying the strongest possible foundation for a prosperous Mpumalanga.

The joy on the faces of the children says it all.
Parents celebrate knowing their children now have access to quality early learning facilities.

Practitioners can teach with renewed pride in an environment that supports excellence.

And the entire community has gained a lasting asset that will benefit generations to come.

The handover of the Chief Mandinda Early Childhood Development Centre is the celebration of a government that continues to deliver services that improve lives.

As children fill these classrooms with laughter, songs and learning, they remind us that every investment in a child is an investment in our collective future.

The future looks brighter than ever.

Because when government builds for children, it builds for generations.

Together, we are creating opportunities and we are changing lives for the better.

The Department hosted an exhibition at the newly built King Nyabela Hospital, bringing essential services closer to the people.

The exhibition brought together national and provincial government departments, state-owned entities, municipalities and other public institutions, creating a one-stop platform where residents accessed information, received assistance and engaged directly with government representatives.

The initiative reflected government's commitment to responsive governance, improved service delivery and ensuring that communities had convenient access to programmes and services designed to improve their quality of life.

The exhibition primarily served the people of the Nkangala District, particularly residents of the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, providing them with a valuable opportunity to interact directly with various government institutions, access essential public services and obtain information on programmes that promote social and economic development.

Through this exhibition, government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with communities and ensuring that no citizen was left behind.
