Salvazione Christian School

Salvazione Christian School Salvazione is an outreach school in Mayfair West, Johannesburg. We offer cost-effective, quality education to the children from surrounding areas.

Salvazione Christian School was founded in 1991 by Adele Talbot when it sought to provide an alternative for learners who could not afford to attend the local schools. In the mid 1990’s, the school moved around quite often. In 1998, it was housed in the Mayfair Baptist Church hall. At this point, this is when The Ridge School first became involved in our project. Volunteers from The Ridge implemen

ted programmes to help the learners and tried to reorganise the school and improve conditions, which had become untenable. A few years later, our partner schools, The Ridge, Auckland Park Preparatory School (APPS), and St Katharine’s School held a fundraiser and were able to purchase a school building for us. At last, through our three partners, we had enough space to house the learners, and each grade had a classroom of their own. Thanks to the generosity of corporate donors and many private individuals, a church building in Mayfair West, Johannesburg, was bought in the latter part of 2008. The location of the building is ideal for the school as it is still within walking distance of the children’s homes in the Slovo Park Informal Settlement, and directly opposite a large municipal park with well-maintained facilities. Although it is fairly old, the building is structurally sound and has been renovated into a fully functioning school. The school is a registered independent school that receives a small state subsidy, and school fees are collected from those families able to afford them. The school’s aim has always been to offer cost-effective, quality education to the children from the Slovo Park Informal Settlement and surrounding areas such as Brixton, Crosby, Langlaagte, Soweto and Roodepoort. The learners pay R150 per month for school fees and learners who cannot afford the fees are able to apply for fee exemption. A very successful “Adopt A Learner” programme supports the large number of children who, through dire financial and personal circumstances, are not able to pay any school fees. Salvazione receives not only sponsorship, but also hands-on support from a variety of sources that help us build self-esteem and collegiality. With assistance, we have opened a library, our reading programme intervention, and a music and art programme. Each of these contributes to a balanced curriculum, and enables the learners to develop their creative talents. The network of support was widened again when Salvazione joined Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa in 2014. The rewards far outnumber the challenges, and every day we are grateful for the kindness and generosity of people and companies. It is humbling to receive the generous and selfless gifts from individuals and corporates which enable our learners to receive a solid education. The volunteers are a dedicated group of people who unselfishly give of their time and talents every week to assist the learners. They do more than just teach the learners; they form relationships with the learners, which is humbling.

🙏

Children learn more from the way we speak to them than from the lessons we teach. Anger can leave wounds that words cannot easily heal. Speak with patience, correct with kindness, and remember: the way you treat them today becomes part of how they treat others tomorrow.

🙏

One of the biggest problems in modern parenting is that many associate accountability with cruelty.

Yes sometimes a child is genuinely struggling and needs support.
Sometimes they are hurting and need understanding.
Sometimes they absolutely are the victim.

But sometimes they broke the rule.
Sometimes they ignored repeated warnings.
Sometimes the consequence was fair.
Sometimes they made a bad choice.

And if every uncomfortable moment is treated like injustice, children never learn how to take responsibility for their actions.

Protecting children from every consequence might feel supportive in the moment.
But long term, it can leave them unprepared for the real world.

Growth usually comes with discomfort.
Maturity comes from learning to reflect, adapt, apologize, and do better next time.

Supporting your child does not mean defending every decision they make.

Sometimes the most important lesson a child can learn is accountability.

✨ Something exciting is about to happen… ✨

Celebrate Women’s Day and the incredible women and girls in our school community! 🌸

Invite the women who inspire you and sign up for a special, uplifting bounti class — all while empowering young girls at Salvazione Christian School through education.

We’re blessed to have Lisa Raleigh, a mum at Auckland Park Preparatory School, leading this fun and energetic class at the beautiful Uniti Studios in Parktown North — in support of our school.

💙 Every participation makes a difference: all proceeds go directly towards covering the school fees of the 103 girls enrolled at Salvazione.

Together, let’s move, celebrate, and invest in the future of our girls!

Psst.... All welcome, no experience needed!

Empowering Our Staff with Bellavista ✨

Last June, our teachers took part in the week‑long iThemba Cognitive Immersion at Bellavista, inspired by the work of Reuven Feuerstein.

This training shifts the focus from what learners know to how they think — unpacking the cognitive functions that drive learning and introducing the power of mediated learning.

Through hands‑on engagement, reflection, and real application, our staff learned to:
- Recognise barriers to thinking
- Support learners more effectively
- Bridge these insights into everyday teaching

We are deeply grateful for this opportunity to strengthen our staff and, ultimately, enrich the learning journey of our students. 💙

🎓 Our Alumni Inspire Us

Born in Mpumalanga and raised in Soweto, Jabulane, a Salvazione alumnus, dared to dream.

🌟 Today, he celebrates an incredible milestone: graduating with Distinction with an MCom in Industrial Psychology from the University of Johannesburg.

Behind this achievement lie years of faith, resilience, sacrifice and hard work.

💬 As a first-generation graduate, Jabulane has this message for every aspiring learner:

"Never let where you come from limit where you are going."

👏 We couldn't be prouder of all that he has accomplished. This is not the end of his journey—it's only the beginning. The best is yet to come!

✨ In the news!

One of our talented learners is making headlines as he performs in The Lion King Jnr. at National Children's Theatre!

Opportunities like these help our learners build confidence, develop new skills and dream even bigger.

Congratulations to our 5 learners who are performing in the sold-out production — continue to shine on stage!

Thank you to the team at National Children's Theatre, our teachers for inspiring our learners, and everyone who has supported this wonderful production.

We are incredibly grateful for the recent generous donation of 21 grocery hampers from the FirstRand Volunteers team and Truffle Asset Management.

For some of our learners, an extended break from school can also mean facing food insecurity.

These hampers will help ensure that learners and families in most need have nutritious meals on the table during this time.

Thank you for making a meaningful difference in the lives of our school community.
