*PSM-EASTERN CAPE PEC still supports the shutting down of schools*

*Released : immediately*
*Date : 17.07.2020*

The *Progressive Student Movement* is amazed that the *SAHRC* issued a statement saying children must go back to school, looking at the circumstances.

On the statement that was released by the Chairperson *Lourence Mushwana* on *15 March 2016* under *SAHRC* was "the SAHRC will never shy away from its responsibilities which are to promote ,protect and monitor all the human rights" mentioned, but they today seem contradicting themselves.

Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression and many more,so where is the "protecting" of human rights on the SAHRC issued statement?

We have the right to life a right from slavery and torture, sending back our children to school is violation of human rights that are meant to be protected by the same twisted SAHRC.

The overloads made when transporting our children to school, failure to monitor children during break time into not exchanging their face masks and many other visible factors like not sanitizing as often as required, are the main reasons why children shouldn't go back to school.

The SAHRC is arrogant, they only promote the sending back of children to school to fulfil their own selfish reasons,we have rights and we have decided to stick with them.

*PROGRESSIVE STUDENT MOVEMENT BELIEVES THAT ITS TIME FOR SOUTH AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION(SAHRC) TO SHUT UP*

Date: 17 July 2020
Released: immediately

The Progressive Student Movement believes that its high time that the incompetent and irrelevant South Africa Human Rights Commission(SAHRC) to shut up on matters pertaining the resumption of schools.

The Commission issued a statement endorsing the motion of the department of basic education on the resumption of schools. What we as an Organization fail to fathom is the endorsement by Human rights Commission. This is the same commission which 3 weeks ago said the decision of sending Grade 7 and 12 to schools was risky and should be reviewed.

SAHRC has no moral stand to speak on behalf of teachers or learners of this country, the commission has dismally failed to advocate for learners human rights for years now and cannot grandstand now with irrelavant statements. Our learners are still learning in undignified conditions which threatens their right to dignity, safety and security, where is the commission in all this? A quarter of children in South Africa cannot access basic education as enshrined by section 9 of the constitution, where is the commission in all this? Our learners are still denied social rights enshrined in section 27 of the constitution, where is the commission the commission in all this? The SAHRC is nothing but a useless entity that should focus on social rights advocacy and stop grandstanding with issues irrelevant to them.

As an Organization founded by the principles of preserving the dignity and integrity of the citizens of the country, one would think that life is paramount at the Commission.

However we've got to witness a flailing and an irrational Human Rights Commission in recent years. The administration of the Commission is contrary to what it stands for. The Commission reverberates motions of anarchy, divisiveness and conflicted objectives.

We call on the Human Rights Commission
