My journey as a q***r activist began as a student at Wits, just searching for belonging, purpose and the courage to start questioning the status quo.

From those early days, I have had the privilege of being part of incredible organisations, movements and communities that fought for dignity, visibility and equality. From our first black le***an organisation Nkateko to HIV activism with NAPWA. Together, we challenged systems, changed hearts and strived to shape a more inclusive South Africa.

And then there was the joy. Through Open Closet, we didn’t just create events, we created spaces where q***r people could celebrate themselves freely, build lifelong friendships and redefine what q***r entertainment could look like. Those moments of laughter, music, love and community remain some of the most beautiful chapters of my life.

So many of you have walked this journey with me. You marched with me, danced with me, challenged me, believed in me and helped shape the person I am today. You are an important part of this story, and I am deeply honoured to finally share my perspective with the world.

Had a great time at Voice of wits

Today feels like a full-circle moment.

At 2pm I’ll be on Voice of Wits, returning to the university where so much of my journey began. Wits didn’t just train me to become a doctor, this is where a lot of my self discovery happened.

To come back, this time as an author sharing The Fire Within, is deeply meaningful. Sometimes the places that raise us become the places that celebrate our growth.
