PESA has conducted extensive research both in private and public schools to ascertain the climate of considering accounting as a preferred learning subject and has found a rapidly declining interest in most learners taking on the subject. According to Research Gate, Grade 12 National Senior Certificate learners studying Accounting decreased by 42,9% over the last five year period, while the number
of learners who passed the subject with a pass mark of 30% and above, decreased by 25%.As a result, there’s a direct declining of educators required by the department within the educational curriculum. Furthermore, this limitation narrows down opportunities available for interested learners to develop further and improve their accounting skills. It was also through COVID, that learning institutions across all economic divides had to adopt and integrate online tutoring as a way to bridge learning systems created by the pandemic. While this posed a challenging reality to the education system, this accelerated the plan to introduce digital infrastructure within the education department, to curb the digital divide in schools. It is in this regard that PESA identified the value of offering comprehensive teaching in both classroom and online tutoring. PESA was founded in 2022 inspired by the plight that came with the digital acceleration as a result of the COVID pandemic that redefined the learning environment for the South African learner. With 20 years of vast experience in teaching and the corporate industry, PESA Director Patricia Phiri through great passion for the subject, has seen the value of the subject Accounting being fundamental to the operations of corporate and government entities aligning to international standards. It is through PESA that we wish to demonstrate the passion and practicality of the subject but most importantly to demystify the complexity of the subject to empower Senior High school leaners with confidence into Higher Learning Institutions. Patricia Phiri is a seasoned training educator who graduated from both the University of Limpopo and Witwatersrand with an Honours Degree in Education in 1990, and since has worked with industry leading government schools, institutions and corporates such as Ort College of Technology, IBM, Exxaro, Aveng Grinaker just to name a few. INTERPERSONAL: In recent academic years, marginalised provinces such as Limpopo, North-West and Mpumalanga have shown a slight improvement in academic results in commercial and science subjects. PESA has identified these provinces as a rich fertile ground to facilitate tutoring services in Accounting towards a significant improvement in their academic performance.
