Hardly a day goes by without yet another alarming report coming out on the perilous state of the global environment, and increasingly it is being recognised that issues such as climate change can seriously threaten security and development throughout the world.

Inspiring Young Minds Through Nature

From 20–22 July 2026, Lapalala Wilderness School was delighted to host Bathokwa Secondary School for a memorable environmental education camp with Grade 8 and 9 learners.

Throughout the camp, learners explored environmental challenges affecting their villages and discovered practical ways they can contribute to protecting their local environment. They also enjoyed a variety of hands-on activities, making learning both fun and meaningful.

A key highlight of the camp was the Green Careers in Biodiversity and Conservation presentation. As learners begin thinking about their future career paths, the session introduced them to the many opportunities available in the environmental and conservation sector, inspiring them to become the next generation of conservation champions.

Together, we are empowering young people with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to create a more sustainable future.

Investing in Tomorrow's Conservation Champions

In line with our mission of identifying and nurturing future conservation champions, Lapalala Wilderness School is proud to welcome 10 FirstRand interns who have joined us for a 12-month workplace experience programme.

From 15–17 July 2026, the interns participated in a three-day induction workshop facilitated by Caroline Drury from Duja Consulting. The workshop covered workplace professionalism, HR policies, labour legislation, workplace ethics, stress management, conflict resolution, and maintaining a professional presence on social media. Through interactive role-playing activities, the interns gained valuable skills to prepare them for the workplace.

Each intern has been paired with an experienced line manager who will mentor and support them throughout the year, ensuring they gain meaningful experience and make the most of this exciting opportunity.

We wish our interns every success as they begin their journey towards becoming the next generation of conservation and environmental leaders.

Environmental Education in Action!!! Somavugha Secondary School
From 15–17 July 2026, Lapalala Wilderness School had the pleasure of hosting Grade 8 learners from Somavugha Secondary School for an inspiring two-night environmental education camp.

The camp encouraged learners to think critically about the environmental challenges facing both the world and their own communities. One of the highlights was a creative role-play and poster design activity, where learners expressed their understanding of environmental issues such as climate change, waste disposal, mining, and overpopulation. Working in groups, they presented how these challenges affect their villages and shared practical solutions that individuals and communities can implement to protect the environment.

It was encouraging to see learners confidently discussing real-world environmental issues, demonstrating that young people are not only aware of these challenges but are also eager to be part of the solution.

Beyond the classroom, learners enjoyed a variety of outdoor experiences, including nature hikes, game drives, and the obstacle course, which promoted teamwork, leadership, resilience, and a deeper appreciation of biodiversity.

At Lapalala Wilderness School, we believe that environmental education empowers young people with the knowledge, skills, values, and confidence to make informed decisions and become responsible custodians of our natural heritage.

Learning Beyond the Classroom – Senwane Secondary School Environmental Camp

Lapalala Wilderness School was delighted to host Senwane Secondary School for an unforgettable two-night environmental education camp. The experience immersed learners in hands-on activities that brought their classroom learning to life while fostering a deeper appreciation for nature.

Throughout the camp, learners participated in exciting game drives, explored biodiversity through interactive environmental education sessions, and worked in groups to analyse and present articles on environmental challenges linked to their school curriculum. They also reflected on the environmental issues affecting their own communities and developed practical action plans, pledging to make a positive difference when they return home.

One of the most inspiring moments was hearing learners confidently share how they intend to become environmental champions in their villages by promoting sustainable practices and encouraging others to care for the environment.

The highlight of the camp was undoubtedly the nature appreciation hike. Many learners explained that, back home, going into the bush usually means collecting firewood. During the hike, however, they discovered a new perspective—that nature is an outdoor classroom filled with lessons waiting to be explored. From understanding geology and identifying different vegetation types to interpreting animal tracks and signs of wildlife, every step revealed something new and exciting.

Experiences like these remind us that environmental education is not just about gaining knowledge—it is about inspiring curiosity, building a connection with nature, and empowering young people to become responsible custodians of the environment.

World Snake Day | Changing Minds, Saving Snakes

In celebration of World Snake Day, Lapalala Wilderness School reflected on a memorable visit by Bakgalaka Primary School, who joined us from 13–15 July 2026 for an exciting environmental education programme.

During their visit, learners had the rare opportunity to learn about the fascinating world of snakes and interact with Mabotse, our Burmese python. For many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that transformed fear into curiosity and understanding.

Many of the learners shared that when snakes are encountered in their villages, they are often killed out of fear. Through hands-on learning, they discovered that snakes play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by controlling rodent populations and that most snakes are not aggressive unless threatened.

The most rewarding moment came when the learners pledged that, instead of killing snakes they encounter in future, they would seek help from knowledgeable adults or trained snake handlers. This commitment demonstrates the true power of environmental education—changing attitudes, inspiring responsible actions, and nurturing a generation that values and protects biodiversity.

At Lapalala Wilderness School, we believe that conservation begins with education. Every learner empowered with knowledge becomes an ambassador for nature in their own community.

Lapalala Wilderness School joins the conservation community in paying tribute to Dr. Michael "Gus" Mills, one of Africa's most respected carnivore scientists, who passed away on 12 July 2026 after battling cancer.

Dr. Gus Mills devoted his life to understanding and protecting Africa's iconic predators. His pioneering research, passion for the natural world, and commitment to practical conservation have inspired generations of scientists, conservationists, and nature lovers.

His legacy reminds us that protecting biodiversity begins with curiosity, sound science, and a deep respect for nature. At Lapalala Wilderness School, we honour his remarkable contribution to conservation and education, and we remain committed to inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire conservation community.

Science, Technology and Innovation Are for Everyone!

What an inspiring celebration of National Science Month at Lapalala Wilderness School in Collaboration with Tshwane University of Technology!

Over two exciting weeks, we welcomed 253 Grade 9 learners from high schools across the Mogalakwena District. The first group of 114 learners attended from 29 June to 3 July 2026, followed by 139 learners from 6 to 10 July 2026. Selected from their respective schools, these young minds came together for an unforgettable five-day science camp designed to ignite curiosity, creativity and a passion for discovery.

The programme aimed to inspire learners to pursue science, mathematics and innovation while developing essential leadership, teamwork and project management skills. On returning to their schools, these learners will play a leading role in establishing and strengthening Mathematics and Science Clubs, inspiring many more young people to embrace STEM.

Learning went far beyond the classroom. Learners took part in hands-on scientific investigations, including setting up blood-feeding traps as a field demonstration, conducting river ecology studies, carrying out vegetation surveys, building electric circuits, and performing practical chemistry experiments to investigate glucose and other chemical reactions. Every activity encouraged critical thinking, problem-solving and scientific inquiry while demonstrating how science can help us better understand and protect the natural world.

The camp also contributed to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, providing meaningful, experiential learning opportunities that equipped learners with knowledge, confidence and practical skills for the future.

Perhaps the greatest transformation was personal. They arrived as strangers from different schools, but they left as friends. Through teamwork, shared challenges and memorable experiences, learners built lasting friendships, grew in self-confidence, discovered their leadership potential and realised that science truly belongs to everyone.

At Lapalala Wilderness School, we are proud to nurture the next generation of scientists, innovators, conservationists and changemakers—because the future of science starts with curious young minds.

A Bittersweet Farewell to a Lapalala Wilderness School Legend

Today, we bid farewell to Anna Tshelane after an incredible 33 years of dedicated service to Lapalala Wilderness School.

For more than three decades, Anna worked tirelessly behind the scenes in our hospitality team, ensuring that every guest was welcomed with warmth, rested in spotless rooms, and enjoyed the comfort of freshly prepared bedding. Her commitment, kindness, and unwavering work ethic helped create the memorable experiences that so many visitors have come to associate with Lapalala.

Anna's beautiful smile, humble spirit, and caring heart have touched the lives of colleagues, learners, and guests alike. She has been more than an employee—she has been part of the Lapalala family, leaving a legacy of excellence, dedication, and genuine hospitality that will not be forgotten.

As she begins this well-deserved chapter of retirement, we celebrate her remarkable journey and thank her for the countless ways she has enriched our school over the past 33 years.
