Sometimes it can look like a child is not listening or not trying.
In reality, they may still be processing what has already been said.

For some children, the world moves too fast. Instructions come quickly, tasks feel rushed, and by the time they have understood one step, the next one has already started. This can leave them feeling confused, overwhelmed or left behind.

These children are often trying their best. They just need more time, clearer steps and less pressure to keep up.

When processing speed is slower, it can affect learning, confidence, emotions and behaviour. Over time, children may become frustrated, anxious or start avoiding tasks that feel too demanding.

Small changes make a big difference. Slowing things down, giving thinking time, and breaking instructions into simple steps can help children feel more capable and understood.

Comment “ITCHY” to learn what retained Primitive Reflexes may be contributing to your child’s tactile defensiveness — whether they’re hypersensitive or sensory-seeking.

Certain retained reflexes can interfere with how the nervous system processes touch, leaving a child feeling either overwhelmed by sensation or constantly craving more of it.

A child with retained reflexes impacting the tactile system may:
🔹 Avoid certain clothing textures or tags
🔹 Overreact to light touch but crave deep pressure
🔹 Resist hair brushing, nail cutting, or tooth brushing

OR they may:
🔹 Constantly touch everything and everyone
🔹 Seek messy play and get overly rough
🔹 Crash into people or objects

When the nervous system is stuck in an immature reflex pattern, everyday sensations can feel either threatening or not registering enough, so the child either avoids or seeks to regulate.

Without sensory input, you may get…

what we like to call “garbage in the brain.” Does this mean something bad? Not at all! It may just mean your child or student’s body isn’t getting the sensory input they need so the brain begins to try and filter it out. You may start to see the brain struggling to filter out unwanted sensory information through behavior, big emotions or interactions with others.

If the brain can’t filter out unwanted sensory information, you may find the child experiencing the following:

😖Sensory meltdowns
😖Sensory sensitivities
😖Withdrawing or hiding
😖Impulsive and can’t focus
😖In fight or flight mode
