WHY CRAWLING IS CRUCIAL
MUSCLE TONE
"...A baby (or child) with low muscle tone would rather lie down or slouch than crawl, run or play. He would find rolling over hard work, and would rather sit quietly in a chair or pram and may be mistaken for a ‘good baby’. Because he is not rolling over he doesn’t develop his core and would then need props like a cushion, an armrest or supporting chair to sit up, or when he learns to sit he may sit with his legs in a w-position to create a bigger and more stable base, with a rounded back. CRAWLING WOULD BE DIFFICULT BECAUSE CRAWLING REQUIRES TREMENDOUS CORE STRENGTH, but bum-shuffling would be easier. When he starts walking, he may also widen his base by walking with his legs quite a distance apart and when he stands, he would rather lean against something than stand up straight.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Muscle tone is an opposing force to the pull of gravity
• Muscle tone is the natural tension in the muscles that forms the basis for movement and balance.
• Muscle tone naturally develops when primitive reflexes prompt repetitive and stereotyped movements and postural righting reactions prompt varied movement reactions.
• Muscle tone develops when moving against own body weight.
If there is low muscle tone in the muscles close to the skeleton, the surface muscles grow bigger to compensate and give support and that is why many children with low muscle tone appear to have an athletic build, while muscle tone in the supporting muscles close to the skeleton is still low."

WHY CRAWLING IS CRUCIAL
DYNAMICS, SPACE AND RELATIONSHIPS
"Movement is part of everyday life and it is very easy to take it for granted. It is equally easy to overlook the importance of the role of movement in learning. All kinds of movement activities are important - like breathing, suckling, swallowing, turning the head, rolling over, sitting, crawling, standing, cruising, walking, jumping, throwing, catching, gliding, climbing, hopping, skipping, galloping and many more.
All these movement activities are important for the baby and a child to discover his or her own body and what it can do.
According to Mollie Davies, the body is an instrument of action with three aspects:
• dynamics which tells us something about how the body moves
• space which means the ways in which the body occupies and uses space
• relationships which identify ways in which the baby uses his body to interact with people and objects.
Crawling blends these three aspects like the ingredients in a favourite dish, things are simply not the same without it.
If a child skips a milestone like crawling, it does not mean the child will have problems later, but because each milestone is also a brain developmental milestone, it is advisable that parents pack away supporting chairs, walking rings and other supporting equipment
in favour of natural development on the tummy and on the back.

WHY CRAWLING IS CRUCIAL
SHAPING THE SPINE
"When babies are born, they have a ‘C’ shaped spine. The spine is mainly cartilage which is strong yet flexible and their muscles are undeveloped. As the baby begins to lift his head, his neck muscles become stronger. Within six – eight weeks, the curvature of the neck (lordotic curve) begins to form as the neck muscles strengthen against the force of gravity. As the baby becomes stronger and more mobile and co-ordinated, the curvature of the neck becomes more pronounced especially when crawling. The spine is only half way to becoming an ‘S’.
The second curve to develop is the lower back curve (lumbar lordosis). This starts when the baby begins to stand and attempts to walk. The lumbar lordosis develops as the muscles in the front of the tummy and pelvis strengthen. Strength within the lower back muscles also helps to maintain the lumbar lordosis.
The spinal curves are now taking on an ‘S’ shape. Activities for the baby to do that strengthen these muscle groups are tummy time, freely kicking of their legs while lying on their backs and crawling on all fours.
The ‘S’ shape gives the spine flexibility and allows for a greater range of movement. This helps your little one to cope with the many physical activities that growing up brings." - Dr Caroline Hay
