Today, the St Ursula’s School community stood together in solidarity and took a stand against violence towards women.

Following our call to wear black and purple, our learners and staff came together to show that we will not remain silent while women continue to face violence, fear and loss in our communities.

We stand with the families who are grieving. We stand with every woman and girl who deserves to feel safe. We stand for respect, dignity, justice and change.

This is more than wearing a colour — it is about teaching our young people to speak up, support one another and never accept violence as normal.

Our school community came together in the true spirit of Mandela Day. ❤️

Our learners generously donated bread, jam, and peanut butter, then rolled up their sleeves to prepare sandwiches for the residents of the Tower of Life Men's Shelter.

As we dedicated 67 minutes to serving others in honor of Nelson Mandela's legacy, something truly special happened we discovered that exactly 67 loaves of bread had been donated. It wasn't planned, but it was a beautiful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can come together in extraordinary ways.

Thank you to every learner, parent, and staff member who contributed. Together, we didn't just make sandwiches—we shared hope, compassion, and the reminder that every act of kindness has the power to make a difference.

We had the privilege of taking our students on the Red Bus in Johannesburg to visit the Holocaust & Genocide Museum.

It was a powerful and emotional experience, giving our students the opportunity to learn about history, humanity, and courage.

Moments like these remind us that education goes beyond the classroom. It is about helping young people understand the past so that they can help build a kinder, more compassionate future.

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have delivered striking evidence that writing by hand engages the brain far more deeply than typing the same words on a keyboard.
In the study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, 36 university students wore high-density EEG caps with 256 electrodes while performing a simple task: copying words they saw on a screen. They did it once by hand with a digital pen and once by typing on a keyboard.
The results were dramatic. When participants wrote by hand, widespread brain connectivity patterns lit up — particularly in theta and alpha frequency bands linked to memory formation, sensory processing, attention, and learning. These connections spanned central and parietal regions. When they typed, those same areas went almost completely silent.
Lead researchers Audrey van der Meer and Ruud van der Weel emphasize that the fine motor movements, sensory feedback from the pen, and visual-motor coordination of handwriting create rich, elaborate neural networks that typing simply doesn’t replicate.
The findings have clear implications for education. As schools shift toward tablets and laptops, this research suggests preserving time for handwriting could give children a significant advantage in learning and memory. In an increasingly digital world, the humble pen may still be one of the best tools for building a stronger brain.
