Love is a biological need, and the more our babies and children are spoken to with love, and treated with love, the safer the baby feels. When the baby feels safe, then life becomes the adventure and a joy it is meant to be. In the end it's pretty simple: "The first thing your do is treat babies and children as human beings, and love them."
(For those times when it seems anything but simple, remember: Stop. Pause. Breathe ~ and get yourself centered in your own heart.)

ON THE BLOG - What is Phonological Awareness? 📚

⭐️ Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds in spoken language. It is a foundational skill for reading and writing!

☂️ Multiple skills fall under the phonological awareness umbrella:

💧Word Awareness: identifying or counting the words in sentences presented orally (the rainbow is beautiful = 4 words).

💧Syllable Awareness: counting, isolating, segmenting, blending & manipulating syllables in a word (rain = 1 syllable, umbrella = 3 syllables).

💧Alliteration: identifying & generating words with the same initial letter/sound (rain runs rapidly).

💧Rhymes: identifying & generating words with the same ending sound, or rime (rain, pain).

💧Onset & Rime: identifying & manipulating the onset & rime in words. The onset is the initial consonant(s) (r in rain) & the rime is the string of letters that follow — the vowel sound & final consonant(s) (ain in rain).

💦 Phonemic Awareness: ability to focus on & manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Includes:

💧Phoneme Isolation: identifying individual phonemes in words (initial phoneme in rain is /r/).

💧Phoneme Blending: putting phonemes together to make a word (the phonemes /r/ /eɪ/ /n/ make the word rain).

💧Phoneme Segmenting: pulling a word apart into individual phonemes (rain is broken down into the 3 phonemes /r/ /eɪ/ /n/).

💧Phoneme Manipulation: changing or moving the phonemes in a word; includes adding, deleting, or substituting phonemes (if we say rain, then change the /r/ to a /p/, the word is pain).
