Last week and weekend felt like a whirlwind, I’m still catching up today.

We didn’t use this little drum at first because the tap-hole was open. But, Bruce found a tap for it and we’ve installed it under the open gutter downpipe on our house.

It’s not much, but it’s something. We used this water to hydrate a garden bed for three days. 💧

Our landlord doesn’t think it’s any use putting tanks by our house, so we’re happy to have this.

Happy Monday!

Here’s a little frog that we have in South Africa that has short back legs and is permanently frowning.

My dad used to call them “the Monteseel Frog” when I was a child.

They’re actually Cape Rain Frogs and I love them so much!

A dear friend gifted us a couch, as he got a new one.Now we have our very own couch! Imagine the luxury 👯‍♀️🥰

What are your homestead solutions for bones?

I mean the small, sharp bits of bone from meat that is cut. (Obvs I process and keep skulls and such)

Landfill isn’t an option for organic matter, for us.

Too sharp and small to be safe for the dog.

Family’s Urban Farm in Cape Town Will Make You Rethink Your Lifestyle!

A decade ago, Jo and Eugene Hunter Adams were living all the way in Boston, working hard and trying to climb out of debt.

Everyone around them seemed to be working for someone else, and after their first child was born, they knew that life would only get more expensive. They wanted something different that came with freedom and time to spend with their kids.

That search led them to the far deep South of Cape Town, to a small plot on the edge between Masiphumelele township and the suburbs. Neither of them had ever farmed. The land was little more than beach sand, overgrown with invasive Port Jackson that spreads fast and crowds out local plants.

Instead of tearing everything out, they turned to permaculture, a way of farming that works with nature rather than against it. Its guiding ideas are care of people, care of the earth, and returning the surplus.
