Sales under pressure. Profits squeezed. What does this mean for South African manufacturing?

The Centre for African Industrialisation has launched its inaugural Quarterly South African Manufacturing Report, offering independent insights into industry conditions to inform policy decisions.

Drawing on responses from senior executives across 48 manufacturing enterprises, the Q2 2026 findings highlight pressure on sales, profitability and employment:

📉 Over 25% of respondents reported contractions of 5.1% or more in total sales, domestic sales and operating profits.
👥 One-third reported declining employment.
🏭 Performance varied, but negative growth trends outweighed positive trajectories across the sample.

These findings echo the pressures reflected in Statistics South Africa’s reported 1.8% quarter-on-quarter contraction in manufacturing output.

At TWIMS, we recognise the value of independent research in informing the decisions that shape manufacturing’s future.
