Trulife We exist to inspire and empower the next generation through life skills and the creative arts One of our key mottos is "Brave Choices = Better Futures".

Currently based in Durban; we are an NPO that predominantly reaches schools across South Africa as well as other countries such as China and the Ukraine. The educational and creative content we produce aims to steer young people towards empowering life choices - assisting them in building emotional competencies and a moral compass that will set them up to be effective leaders and key participants in their communities and our society at large. We believe that by helping the next generation to make brave choices, we will succeed in helping them create better futures - not only for themselves, but for the world at large.

We can’t expect adults to keep young people safe if we don’t give them the tools to do it.✊
Young people need safe spaces to talk. But teachers and school leaders also need to know what to look for, what to do, and how to respond when something doesn’t feel right.
That’s why we created Safe to Learn, Trulife’s safeguarding course designed to give educators practical knowledge and tools to recognise risk, respond appropriately, and help create safer schools.

Because safeguarding isn’t just about knowing the signs.
It’s about having the confidence, knowledge and responsibility to act.

What if we could teach young people to look beyond the fruit? 🌳

At the heart of Trulife’s Changing Course workshops is our GBV Tree — a simple framework that helps learners understand that violence doesn’t appear out of nowhere.

There are the fruits we see.
The branches we sometimes overlook.
The roots of beliefs that shape behaviour.
And the soil, the culture and environments in which those beliefs grow.

Once young people can see the whole tree, they can start asking better questions:
What have I been taught?
What have I accepted as normal?
What can I challenge?
And what can I choose to grow instead?
That’s what prevention can look like.

For schools, Changing Course creates a structured, age-appropriate space for these conversations — helping learners build the knowledge, language and confidence to recognise harm, question harmful beliefs and make informed choices.

Parents: ask your school to start the conversation.
Schools: partner with Trulife and bring Changing Course to your learners.
Because if we want to change the fruit, we have to start changing the tree. 🌱

Young people are still figuring out what healthy relationships, respect and boundaries look like.
When we give them space to ask questions and challenge what they’ve been taught, they can become part of changing what grows.

Investing in young people means investing in change. Focused GBV interventions at a school-level are a key strategy for GBV reduction, confirmed by their inclusion as a key focal point in the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (NSP) 2020-2030.

Children are always learning from the world around them.
The way those around them treat certain issues, the media messages that shape their values and worldview. Our message to learners is quite simple: We cannot feed our soil poison, and expect a healthy tree! So, what would healthy, life-giving soil look like for the young men and women of South Africa?

We learn a lot of what we believe before we even realise it.
Some of those beliefs go unquestioned simply because they’ve always been there. But when we bring them into the open, we can start to question them. And young people’s natural curiosity makes them excellent at this, which is why Trulife believes in the power of education to transform a generation.

Not every behaviour looks like violence.
The moments can seem small and innocent, but they help shape what we accept as normal. And if we want to change the fruit, we have to pay attention to the branches too. Because changes in our behaviour over the little things add up to life-saving changes in the big things.

The fruit is what we see; it doesn’t grow on its own, and picking off what’s visible doesn’t change the tree. If we want to prevent GBV, we have to look beyond the act itself and start asking what allowed it to grow in the first place.🍎
Real prevention means looking deeper.
