We had a blast this past weekend with our long awaited Messy Play Class!

13/09/2025

The goal for a messy play class is to provide children with a rich sensory experience that encourages exploration, creativity, and development across multiple areas. Messy play helps children learn about textures, sensations, and their environment through hands-on activities that stimulate brain development and new synaptic connections. It also fosters communication skills by asking questions, promotes independent play, and supports social interaction and imitation.

Key goals include:

Encouraging sensory exploration through tactile experiences like paint, water, sand, or other materials.

Supporting cognitive development by stimulating the brain with new sensations.

Enhancing language skills through naming objects and actions involved in the play.

Building social skills via cooperative play and imitation.

Cultivating fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Allowing children to safely express creativity and have fun while learning.

Moon sand offers several benefits for children, mainly through sensory and creative play. It provides a soft, moldable texture that promotes fine motor skills as children squeeze, shape, and sculpt the sand, helping develop hand and finger strength and coordination. The tactile experience supports sensory development by engaging the sense of touch, which is important for brain processing and understanding the world.

Moon sand also encourages creativity and imaginative play, allowing children to explore different shapes and designs while expressing their imagination. It can enhance cognitive skills like problem solving and reasoning as children experiment with molding and shaping. Additionally, playing with moon sand can foster language development when children describe the sensations and their creations and promote social skills when playing with others by encouraging communication and cooperation.

Many moon sands are made with non-toxic, taste-safe ingredients, making it safe for younger children under supervision. The activity supports open-ended learning aligned with early childhood frameworks focusing on curiosity, confidence, and persistence.

Play therapy is not just about play—it’s about healing, connection and giving children the freedom to express what words cannot.

During International Play Therapy Week, we celebrate the power of play as a pathway to healing. For children, play is more than just fun—it’s their language, their way of making sense of the world.

Through play therapy, children can explore emotions, process difficult experiences and build the confidence to express themselves in a safe and supportive space. It’s not about fixing—it’s about understanding, connecting and empowering.

Let’s recognize the importance of play in a child’s journey toward healing and growth.
