As black people, we grow up aspiring to be employed.
We are not equipped with the mind set or skills to start our own businesses.
Successful black entrepreneurs are the exception in South Africa.
Your line of study can determine whether you can be an entrepreneur.
That is why we offer career guidance so that people understand that when selecting their course, they need to do their research and find out if it is required by the labour market and whether it can create opportunities for entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is a scarce and critical skill.
Youth should set themselves up for self-employment as a second option if they can’t land a job

North West Innovation Competition open for entries
The North West Innovation Competition has been launched by the NWDC. It is a project spearheaded by the NWDC's Research and Innovation unit, in collaboration with the North-West University (NWU), the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) of the Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Finance Economy and Economic Development (FEED).
The main objective of the Innovation Competition is to make citizens in all the province's communities aware that they can make a difference to their lives, and those of others, by being innovative. In addition, it establishes a sense of self value and pride.
The primary target audience to participate in the competition is any Bokone Bophirima (North West Province) citizen from the age of 16 years with innovative ideas that could benefit their community.
To enter the Innovation Competition, entrants can simply SMS their ideas in Setswana, English or Afrikaans, starting with "PLAN" followed by a short description of their innovative idea in
50 words, their name and surname and the town that they live in to 30041. The closing date of this phase is 15 September 2016.
A committee of volunteers from the NWDC, the NWU and TIA will evaluate ideas and shortlist a number of promising ideas. These promising ideas will be awarded certificates of acknowledgement and developed further on a paper basis during Phase 2.
The prizes awarded to the top three winners will be as follows:
• 1st Prize to the value of R100,000
• 2nd Prize to the value of R50,000
• 3rd Prize to the value of R25,000
NWDC will also offer services to the innovators that qualify in terms of coaching and possible loans. The NWU and TIA will also assist innovators in line with their mandates.
For all the competition details and downloadable versions of the posters and pamphlets in both English and Setswana, visit the NWDC's website – www.nwdc.co.za
Any queries may be referred to the Research and Innovation unit of the NWDC.
