📢 INDUSTRY ALERT: 1,475 Qualifications Reach End of Registration. Employers Urged to Review Training Plans

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has confirmed that 1,475 pre-2009 legacy qualifications have now reached the end of their registration period as South Africa continues its transition towards modern occupational qualifications that better align with workplace demands and industry needs.

📌 IMPORTANT: This does not mean that all legacy qualifications have been cancelled.

Of the affected qualifications:
• 630 have already received learner enrolment extensions.
• The remaining qualifications are being phased out, deregistered, or replaced by the end of June 2026.

The official list is expected to be published in the Government Gazette on 15 June 2026, with further details to follow on the SAQA website.

Employers, training providers, and skills development stakeholders should take note that future training plans, learnerships, and skills programmes may be impacted depending on the qualifications selected.

Reassuringly, all qualifications that have already been awarded remain fully valid and recognised.

Camblish Training Institute will review the published list and provide detailed guidance to clients and partners early next week, including recommendations for alternative programmes and transitional arrangements where required.

Action for Employers🇿🇦:
Before committing training budgets or finalising WSP/ATR, B-BBEE, Skills Development, or Employment Equity plans, we strongly encourage organisations to verify that their intended qualifications remain active and available.

Our team is ready to assist with qualification reviews, replacement programmes, and compliance-focused training solutions to ensure your skills development objectives remain on track.

Together, let's build a workforce equipped with relevant, future-ready skills.

📢 Important Update for South Africa’s Skills Development Sector

We welcome the recent announcement by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, regarding the extension of certain Pre-2009 Legacy Qualifications. This development provides valuable support for employers, learners, and Skills Development Providers as South Africa continues its transition towards Occupational Qualifications under the QCTO framework.

The extension creates an opportunity for organisations to:

- Continue qualifying learner enrolments where applicable
- Complete existing learnerships and skills development programmes
- Finalise learner achievements and certifications
- Strengthen compliance and workplace skills planning
- Prepare effectively for the transition to Occupational Qualifications

At Camblish Training Institute, we view this as a positive step towards protecting learner progress, supporting employer development strategies, and ensuring continuity within South Africa’s skills development landscape.

However, it is important to note that not all qualifications have been extended. Employers and training providers are encouraged to review the approved qualification lists and confirm the status of qualifications relevant to their Workplace Skills Plans, Learnerships, and Training Programmes.

As the sector evolves, proactive planning remains essential. Camblish Training Institute remains committed to helping employers, learners, and partners navigate these changes while ensuring compliance, quality training, and successful skills development outcomes.
