A huge congratulations go out to our Water Polo First Team after winning the coveted SACS Water Polo Tournament in Cape Town this past weekend.
In the short period format, our team played 12 high-intensity games over the course of three days. They were undefeated in the group stages, with solid wins against Bishops and Clifton in the quarterfinal and semifinal, respectively.
This lined up a showdown against tournament hosts SACS in the final. SACS took control of the first half, leading 5-2 at the break. Our players fought back in the second period and, after taking the lead briefly, ended the regulation time at 6 goals apiece. Extra time followed, with St John’s taking a slender 7-6 lead at the halfway mark. Another swift counterattack gave our boys a commanding 8-6 lead going into the final moments of the game. A few frantic moments and a consolation goal to SACS were not enough the stop the Blues from taking the gold medal home with them. This is the first time we have achieved this since 2009, and the sixth time since 2002.
Congratulations to Tigran Sennett (UV Hill), Matthew Pryce (UV Fleming), Jared Shapiro (UV Nash) and Luka Rajak (UV Nash) for making the Tournament Team and Luka Rajak for Goalie of the Tournament.
Results:
Vs. Pretoria Boys 10-1
Vs. St. Benedict’s 8-1
Vs. Selbourne 7-2
Vs. Grey College 6-1
Vs. Michaelhouse 8-0
Vs. Paul Roos 4-1
Vs. Rondebosch 4-4
Vs. Kearsney 3-3
Vs. Northwood 11-3
Vs. Bishops 6-4
Vs. Clifton 7-5
Vs. SACS 8-7
St John’s has won all three major water polo tournaments this year - KES, Clifton and SACS - a feat no other team has achieved to date.
Over and above this, nine of our players won gold at the SA Nationals (Currie Cup) Tournament with the Gauteng U18 team making this a memorable and historic year for them.
What a brilliant end to the season as we say farewell to our matric players.

Good luck to our First Team Water Polo boys who head to Cape Town this weekend to play in the SACS Tournament 2022.

This is an extra-special tournament for our Matric players as this will be their last tournament of their high school careers, culminating in all of them playing 100 First Team games.

Tiggy, Jared, Chris, Alex and Luka also played in the SACS Junior Tournament 2017 when they were in Grade 7 (spot the mascot who is also flying to Cape Town this weekend) and won GOLD, thus making SACS 2022 very sentimental for all players and parents.

Their journey together has been a very special one. Nurtured by Coach Nick Rodda from Prep School and then Master In Charge of Water Polo Vlado Trninic, this team have achieved some phenomenal success (see statistics below), demonstrating the power of having young players nurtured through a pipeline from young that can grow together.

The team is now ranked No 1 in the country, and we call on our water polo community to tune into the SuperSport Schools live streaming this weekend to support them as the Matrics make their final mark representing St John’s College Water Polo.

The U15 Waterpolo team travelled to Cape Town this past weekend for the Wynberg Ian Melliar Cup Waterpolo Tournament.

The boys played their hearts out and won 6th place in the tournament out of 20 schools. 72 games were played in total over 4 days.

The following boys won Man of the Match for various games: Sam Gomes, Adam Hanslo, Kamogelo Thobejane, Michael van Heerden and Nic Searle.

In addition to this, the St John’s team won the Keith Richardson Shield for the team with Exceptional Sportsmanship. Something I think that they should be very proud of! The boys left for the airport, so Wynberg school is sending me the replica Trophy, which I will hand over to Nick Rodda and Thabang Madi.

Lastly, Nic Searle and Kamogelo Thobejane were chosen as part of the Tournament Team. Well done, boys!

Congratulations to the First Team Water Polo gents who took GOLD for the second consecutive year in the Clifton Tournament Water Polo Tournament 2022.

Well done to Tigran Sennett for being selected as Defender of the Tournament and Coach Vlado Trninic for his well-deserved award of Coach of the Tournament!

Thank you to Manager Aidan Quinn for the comprehensive summary below of the tournament results and experience.

Day 1:
Game 1: Pearson 21-0 won
Game 2: Glenwood 14-1 won
Day one was a warm-up for the boys to get them climatised and ready for the more serious games to come. The boys were looking good and relaxed, keeping to their game plan and keeping themselves fresh for the next few days.

Day 2:
Game 3: Hilton 7-2 won
Our last group stage game and our biggest competition for the group stage. The boys showed their experience in the game and maintained a solid hold on the game with a strong defence that Hilton could not get around. Finishing first in their group secured the boys' spot in the quarter-finals for the next day.

Day 3:
Game 4: Grey P.E 8-2 won
The quarter-finals are where the tournament truly starts for the team. The competition ramps up, and we couldn’t drop our focus. Although the boys took a commanding hold of the game, never allowing Grey P.E to have a foothold in attack, they were a bit sluggish to begin the game missing a few opportunities on attack. But they defended well and eventually ran away with the game with a commanding lead. There were still a few mistakes we needed to iron out before the semi-finals later that day.

Game 5: SACS 7-2 won
The semi-finals were our toughest match in the tournament. We played the SACS team that we have played previously at the KES tournament finals. Though we won that game, it was still a closely contested game, and we could not lose focus. SACS did confront the boys with solid defence, and we made a few crucial mistakes at the beginning of the game that SACS did capitalise on. However, we did not allow them to take the lead at any point in the game. Our defence was too formidable for SACS to overcome( they only got half the shots off that St.John’s did), and we closed it out by scoring two quick goals in the third quarter of the game, and we maintained that lead for the rest of the game. Well done to a well-coached and confident SACS team. This was the true finals of the tournament, and it was a pity that we could not have faced off in the finals. With the victory secured, the team moved on to play in the finals.

Day 4:
Game 6: Paul Roos 13-7 won
We were facing Paul Roos in the final, the boys were confident in their ability, but we could not underestimate our opposition in the finals. The game was well played on both sides, but our team's experience won it out for them. The game was closely played in the first two quarters, but St.John’s pulled ahead with greater conditioning and defence, robbing Paul Roos of a majority of their attacks and converting many of ours.

The Boy’s played very well all weekend, only conceding 17 goals total in the tournament. They had an incredible attitude toward their opposition all weekend, respecting the effort of all the teams they played. They have worked incredibly hard not just this season but throughout the Waterpolo careers at St.John’s and have been rewarded with a repeat victory at Clifton and a second tournament victory in the year, having won KES in the first term.

Coach Vlado Trninnic was very pleased with the boys' courage and spirit in and out of the water. He doesn’t care for the victory as long as the boys play to the best of their ability and have fun along the way. He is, of course, happy with their victory, happy to see them rewarded for all their effort and hard work. We wish them good luck with the coming SACS tournament and hope they can repeat the great experience they had this past weekend.

Today's match against Spain was always going to be a tough one for our SA U18 Men. Nevertheless, the team showed exactly what they are capable of by winning the first chukka 4:3 taking the Spanish completely by surprise.

The final result reflects the experience of the Spanish team but our U18 SA Men can be exceptionally proud of today's performance and put this to good use when they meet Canada on the15th, when they will be playing for Group D 3/4 position.

Enjoy your 'day off' tomorrow Gents!
