The unbelievable joy when learners learn about Trains
The credit goes to my trainers, NOT ME. This year Ntombi, a Senior Trainer at the Maths Centre, and colleagues on the Gibela project, cracked the code of how learners learn, how they engage in STEM. Yes! We do challenge and provoke learners sometimes to dig deep; mostly, it is to engage in the beauty of Maths and Science in Mother Nature, Mother Earth, and the Universe. Grade 10 cohorts from twelve project schools were tasked with designing and constructing a moving train model that could either complement the Gibela train or represent their own innovative concept of a train for future use. As part of the preparation, learners first visited the Gibela manufacturing site, where they observed the process of train design and production. This direct exposure played a critical role in equipping them with practical insights and provided a clear framework for what would be expected in their own projects. Thanks to Gibela for sponsoring this life-saving journey for 1000s of young people as the dark shadows of Matric approach. Enjoy. STEM Competitions of 2025

Learners used the WhatsApp platform to communicate and share ideas about their projects, staying connected after school and discussing the progress of their designs. They also coordinated who would bring specific items, scheduled afternoon sessions, and ensured constant communication, which strengthened collaboration and improved the overall quality of the projects.

My staff surprised me and sent shock waves of gratitude -- as you get older, connections keep you going. A selection of my favorite cakes, vegetarian food, flowers - oh my goodness. When the video began with children from all projects around the country singing Happy Birthday in their mother tongue and English; I could only offer floods of tears --

The Covid-19 pandemic exposed the high levels of inequality within the South African education system. Learners were unable to gain access to the resources they needed in order to participate in distance learning.
At the Maths Centre, we try to help lessen the levels of inequality within the South African education system. You can help us aid learners and teachers by donating using the following link:
