[GAMBLING AND STUDENT WELLBEING SYMPOSIUM]

During the Gambling and Student Wellbeing Symposium at Stellenbosch University, President General of the South African Union of Students (SAUS), Moses Handsome Nkambako reflected on the realities faced by many students who become trapped in cycles of gambling and debt.

“Students are consistently exposed to messages suggesting that prosperity is only one bet away. The reality is often very different. What starts with a small win can lead to bigger bets, and before long students find themselves losing money meant for groceries, accommodation and other necessities. Many end up borrowing from their peers in an attempt to recover losses, only to fall deeper into debt.”

He further emphasised that the consequences extend beyond finances, affecting academic performance, student wellbeing and relationships, as students struggle to cope with the pressures and realities associated with gambling-related harm.
