Today, we asked the children to draw the sound of the shofar.

Just that. No instructions on what a shofar "should" look like, only the sound, and what it stirred in them.

As we prepare for Rosh Hashanah, our children have been exploring the shofar and what it means. Through the Reggio-inspired idea of the "100 languages," we gave them colour and paper instead of words, and let them show us what they heard.👂

The process was a wonder to behold, some drew spirals , others bold lines and then some focussed on smaller representations. Each child heard something different in that single blast and each one found their own way to say it.🖍🖌

This is the kind of learning that doesn't need to be taught twice. When it happens through the body through colour, movement, sound it stops being a lesson and becomes instinct. It's visceral. And it's the kind that stays.

📚✨ “There’s no app like your lap…” ✨📚

International Literacy Day at Hirsch Lyons was filled with a very special kind of magic. ❤️

At our TELC, we welcomed some very special people into our school to read to our talmidim and talmidos. The atmosphere was simply incredible — calm, warm, joyful and filled with the beautiful sound of stories being shared.

Each child was able to choose their own book from our wonderful array of stories and then find their own quiet, cosy spot to listen. Watching the children become completely absorbed in their chosen story was truly magical. 📖✨

And the magic continued at Hirsch Lyons Primary School, where our classrooms were transformed into enchanting spaces dedicated to the joy of reading. ✨📚 From cosy reading corners to imaginative, story-filled settings, every classroom became a little world of its own — creating the perfect environment for our children to escape into the pages of a book.

And there was something even deeper happening.

The Torah tells us: “וְשִׁנַּנְתָּם לְבָנֶיךָ” — “You shall teach them diligently to your children.”

Learning is not only about what we teach — it is about the moments we create, the words we share, and the love of learning that we pass from one generation to the next.

Today reminded us that a book opens a world, but a person sharing that book opens a heart. 💕

In a world filled with screens and technology, there really is no app like your lap — no greater connection than a child curled up beside someone they trust, listening to a story and getting lost in a world of imagination.

📚 Read. Listen. Imagine. Connect. Dream.

🍯 Getting Ready for Rosh Hashonah! 🍯🍎

Our classrooms were filled with excitement, sweetness and anticipation as we celebrated our Rosh Hashanah Simanim Party!
The children explored the special foods we place on our Rosh Hashanah table, learning that each siman carries hope for the year ahead. From sweet apples and honey to pomegranates and other traditional simanim, every taste became an opportunity to learn, discover and connect to our Torah and traditions.
But it wasn't just about the food… it was about preparing our hearts for a new year. ❤️
Through hands-on experiences, conversation and lots of simcha, our children begin to understand that Rosh Hashanah is a time to think about the year ahead, to make good choices, to grow in our middos, mutzvos and to ask Hashem for a Shana Tova U’Metuka. 🍎🍯

Hirsch Lyons Torah Early Learning Centre wishes you a year filled with sweetness, health, happiness and endless opportunities to grow.

🌺Growing Gratitude🌷

As part of our exploration of Elul, our 5 senses and Spring, the TELC children visited our neighbours at Schaffler’s Nursery to thank them for kindly returning our balls. We spoke about Hakaras Hatov — recognising and expressing gratitude — and how important it is to notice the kindness of others.

Our visit became a wonderful sensory exploration as the children smelled, touched and observed the fruit trees, flowers and vegetables. Their curiosity led us to wonder: What do plants need to grow?🪴🌳

We explored the importance of water, sunlight, soil and care, making connections to our Jewish responsibility to care for the world Hashem has given us.🌞

The children then chose the fruits and vegetables they would like to plant in our very own TELC vegetable garden. Through this experience, they begin to develop a sense of ownership, responsibility and connection to nature.

As we enter a new Jewish year, Elul reminds us that just like plants, our relationships and our middos need care and nurturing to grow.

🌷 Spring has sprung, and our Grade 2's celebrated by creating beautiful Gratitude Gardens! 🌼🌱 Through their colourful artwork, they reflected on the people, places and little things that make them grateful each day.

A beautiful reminder that just like flowers, gratitude grows when we nurture it! 💕

Today at our TELC, our little learners got hands-on at snack time as they squeezed their very own fresh orange juice! 🧡

From whole oranges to delicious juice, the children loved being part of the process — squeezing, tasting and enjoying the fruits of their hard work! 😋🍊

A fun, sensory-filled activity that turned snack time into a wonderful learning experience! 🌟

We introduced an overhead projector in our TELC, alongside a collection of open-ended, everyday objects, with the intention of following the children’s lead and seeing where their curiosity took them.📽💡

The children were captivated by the apparatus and eagerly experimented with opaque and transparent objects, discovering how light, shadows and shapes changed as they moved and manipulated the materials. Their exploration naturally evolved into colour mixing, imaginative storytelling and creative collaboration.

The creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm were truly off the charts! It was wonderful to watch the children take ownership of the experience, turning a simple invitation to explore into a rich world of discovery and imagination.🤓
