“How do we remain in relationship when we are different?”

This question sits at the heart of Myrna Lewis’s powerful WinWinno Peacebuilding Award speech.

In her acceptance speech, Myrna reflects on the personal, historical and professional journey that led to the development of Lewis Deep Democracy, from growing up in apartheid South Africa to working alongside her late husband, Greg Lewis, during South Africa’s transition into democracy.

What began in the complexity of South Africa has since travelled across continents, into workplaces, schools, communities, peacebuilding spaces and leadership rooms around the world.

LDD Around the World: A Look Back at What’s Been Happening

The past few months have marked an important season of growth, visibility and global movement for Lewis Deep Democracy. Across different countries, communities and learning spaces, the work has continued to expand, deepen and reach new audiences.

💡 Relating Reimagined workshops with Myrna Lewis in South Africa, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany brought people into powerful conversations about connection, difference and change.

💡 LDD instructors gathered at the Instructor Retreat, creating space to reflect, reconnect and strengthen the global teaching community.

💡 A successful ShiftEQ course brought together changemakers from around the world.

💡 The live What If? Sessions with Myrna Lewis and Belamie Peddle launched in June. Opening space for real questions, real examples and practical exploration of Lewis Deep Democracy in everyday contexts.

💡 We celebrated Myrna Lewis’s recognition through the WinWinno Peacebuilding Award, honouring the peacebuilding contribution at the heart of this work.

💡 We launched Turning Tension into Trust, a new online course designed to make key LDD concepts more accessible to people navigating tension, resistance and difficult conversations in their teams, organisations and daily lives.

💡 We celebrated the opening of the first LDD Hub in the Netherlands, creating new opportunities for connection, learning and practice within the LDD community.

Together, these moments point to something larger: Lewis Deep Democracy is moving far and wide.

The work is reaching new rooms, new regions and new conversations, while staying rooted in its purpose of helping people work with difference, surface what is unspoken, and build trust where it matters most.

As we look back, we are also looking forward, with incredible plans, collaborations and expansions ahead.

In this moment, Stuart reflects on leadership in today’s world, where autocratic voices are increasingly visible and many leaders are not interested in hearing what others have to say.

Lewis Deep Democracy began in a moment of profound change.

Its roots are in post-apartheid South Africa, when Myrna and Greg Lewis were asked to support integration work within a large power company.

It was a time when people were being asked to work together differently.
Not in theory.
Not someday.
But in real rooms, with real history, real tension and real decisions to make.

Out of that work came a practical way to help groups listen more deeply, include more voices, and work with the tensions that often sit beneath the surface.

This is part of what makes Lewis Deep Democracy so powerful today.
It was shaped in a context where trust had to be rebuilt, where difference could not be ignored, and where moving forward meant finding a way to hear what had not yet been heard.

Today, LDD continues to support people, teams and organisations around the world to work with conflict, resistance and change in a more honest and inclusive way.
Its roots remind us that even in difficult rooms, something new can become possible.
