27TH KHANYA COLLEGE WINTER SCHOOL ✊

2026 Winter School
26 June 1976 was not only about resisting Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.
The youth also rose up against the drop in quality education and falling living standards of blacks under apartheid.
To this day, those same struggles continue
That’s why the urgency to challenge the current public education system is greater than ever.
At the 2026 Khanya College Winter School, we ask what is the meaning of education for liberation.

Education for Liberation - Going Back to Our Roots
In 1976, the youth rose up against education that oppressed them.
50 years later, the struggle continues.
Today, learners in public schools face overcrowded classes, no textbooks, and broken infrastructure.
At Winter School, we go back to our Soweto roots to ask: What kind of education builds freedom now?
Winter School 2026
Khanya College is proud to host its annual 27th Winter School from 14–19 June 2026 at the House of Movements, Johannesburg.
This year’s theme, "Education for Liberation," marks 50 years since the Soweto Uprising, reminding us of the power of education as a tool for resistance and social transformation.
What does education for liberation mean to you?

Today's Reading Session at Malvern High School focused on a poem Inequality by Edward Kofi Louis.
Learners engaged with the text and connected their experiences to what they see in their own communities.
We concluded the session with art on the theme 'Education for Liberation,' giving students space to express what those ideas mean to them.
