🏊♀️ Why learning to float matters
When a child first learns to float, they often fight the water. They may lift their head, bend their knees, tense their body or try to sit up. This makes them sink.
The key lesson is:
The more relaxed your body is, the easier it is to float.
Floating teaches children to:
🌊 Become comfortable and confident in the water
🫁 Control their breathing
🧘 Relax rather than panic
💪 Understand their body's position in the water
🛟 Develop an essential water-survival skill
🏊♀️ Prepare for other swimming skills, including kicking and strokes
And perhaps the most important message for parents:
A child doesn't need to be a strong swimmer to benefit from learning how to float.
A child who unexpectedly finds themselves in the water may instinctively panic and try to climb or stand. Knowing how to roll onto their back, relax and float can give them valuable time to breathe and stay above the surface.
