Our Giving page link: https://www.stithian.com/give-to-st-stithians/thandulwazi-maths-and-science-academy The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy, is an education programme run by the St Stithians Foundation. It was established in 2006 out of the need for e

ffective action in addressing the critical issues pertaining to the teaching of Maths and Science in schools in and around Gauteng. Concerns about the state of Maths and Science teaching have been heightened by the national Matric results over the past few years. It has become clear that South Africa is not producing enough matriculants with the Maths and Science results required to supply the needs of our growing economy and, in turn, this will impact negatively on all sectors of industry and commerce.

SATURDAY SCHOOL - JULY 2026

While many spent their Saturday resting, hundreds of young people chose something different: they chose their future.
This past Saturday, the Thandulwazi Academy welcomed school students and student teachers to our 16th Saturday School of 2026. As the morning sun rose over St Stithians College, classrooms quickly filled with energy, determination, and hope. For many, these Saturdays are about far more than extra lessons. They are about possibility.

Across campus, dedicated students strengthened their academic foundations, prepared for brighter opportunities, built friendships, and experienced world-class learning and sporting facilities.
At the same time, our Early Childhood Development Teacher students explored ways to create stimulating learning environments for foundation phase students, while a workshop by Autism South Africa deepened their understanding of autism and practical learner support.

These moments matter. Every student who grows in confidence, every aspiring teacher who gains new skills, and every child who will benefit from a compassionate educator represents a ripple effect of positive change.

At Thandulwazi, we believe education transforms lives, strengthens communities, and helps build a more equitable South Africa. Each Saturday is a day of dreams taking shape, opportunities being created, and futures being rewritten. Because when we invest in education, we invest in South Africa's future.

To our school students, student teachers, facilitators, partners, and supporters: thank you for being part of this journey. Your commitment reminds us that real change happens one lesson, one teacher, and one student at a time.

TEACHER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

At Thandulwazi, we believe that the greatest investment we can make is in the teachers who shape young minds. Through our Teacher Development Programme, we equip educators with practical skills, innovative teaching strategies and ongoing support that help transform learning in early childhood classrooms.

One of the ways we are strengthening this work is through the integration of the Finding Thabo programme. Its play-based, evidence-informed approach gives teachers practical tools to better understand each child's development and create engaging learning experiences that help every child thrive.

Together, we are empowering teachers to build confident, capable learners from the very beginning - laying the foundations for lifelong success.

The impact of the Finding Thabo programme to date includes:
• More than 400,000 children reached
• More than 12,000 practitioners trained
• A goal of reaching 1 million children by 2030

CAREERS DAY - Celebrating Careers, Community and 20 Years of Impact

This past weekend, Thandulwazi students, staff, volunteers and supporters came together for a very special Careers Day and 20th Birthday Celebration.

The day began with a moving chapel service featuring a conversation between Johanni La Vita, who started the Saturday School Programme in 1989 with just 16 learners, and Dr Mary Reynolds, who has dedicated 37 years of service to St Stithians. Their reflections reminded us how a small act of faith and commitment can grow into something truly transformative.

From those first 16 learners, Thandulwazi has now supported more than 17,000 young people to improve their results in Mathematics, the Sciences, Accounting and English, opening doors to brighter futures and greater opportunities.

Following the service, everyone gathered on the field to celebrate 20 years of Thandulwazi as a formally established programme. Birthday cake, cupcakes and shared memories marked this important milestone, while students explored a wide range of career opportunities through the many inspiring exhibitors and professionals who generously shared their knowledge and advice.

A heartfelt thank you to all our exhibitors, guests, volunteers and supporters who helped make the day such a memorable success.

Here's to celebrating our past, embracing the present, and inspiring the future.
