🦴🌿 Wildlife, Just as Nature Intended

Two beautiful moments from the wild, one capturing the tender bond between a hyena mother and her young, as her cub suckles and plays around her, and the other showing a curious hyena investigating and sniffing a tree branch. 🐾

We love watching these incredible animals in their natural state, not performing, not disturbed, simply living, exploring and interacting with their environment as nature intended.

From the love between a mother and her cub to the simple curiosity of a hyena exploring its surroundings, every moment in the wild tells a story. ❤️🌍

🌸 The Strength of a Mother. The Heart of a Woman. 🐾

There is something profoundly beautiful about the bond between a mother and her young, a connection built on protection, guidance, patience and unconditional love. ❤️

Watching this hyena mother care for her babies is a powerful reminder that the instinct to nurture and protect is one of nature’s greatest strengths.

As we reflect on the Women’s Day public holiday we have just celebrated, we honour women everywhere, mothers, daughters, sisters, caregivers, leaders and protectors. Women shape lives, strengthen families and communities, and help build a better future for generations to come.

Just as this mother stands watch over her young, women stand as guardians of the next generation. 🌍💪🏽

Let us celebrate their strength, resilience, compassion and immeasurable contribution, not only on Women’s Day, but every day.

🐾 Protecting nature. Empowering people. Honouring the women who nurture our future.

Scouts South Africa

Don’t just tell young people they are the future. Give them the tools to shape it. 🌍⚜🛠

Too often, we tell Africa’s youth that they are “the leaders of tomorrow”. But what if we stopped waiting for tomorrow? At the 2nd Africa Scout Moot, hosted by SCOUTS South Africa, more than 300 young people from over 40 countries came together under the theme “Phezulu Nangaphezulu”. They came for adventure, friendship and new experiences, but they left with something even more powerful: the opportunity and the skills to practise leadership today. 💪🌍💜

Through the Africa Development Village, Rovers explored conflict resolution, innovation, environmental responsibility, health and wellbeing, digital citizenship and community service. They pitched ideas, solved problems, worked across cultures, made decisions and learned by doing. And that is what youth empowerment looks like. It is giving young people the skills, confidence, responsibility and opportunities to take action and not simply telling them that one day they will lead. ⚜👏💜

As we celebrate Women’s Month under the theme “Empowered women empower the nation”, this message is especially important. ⚜💜👑🌱 When girls and young women are given opportunities to lead, speak, make decisions and serve their communities, they are not preparing to lead someday. They are leading now.

And when young men grow up alongside capable female leaders, they learn that equality, respect, collaboration and shared responsibility are simply part of building stronger communities. 💪🌍

At SCOUTS South Africa, we believe young people should never have to wait for permission to make a difference. Give them the tools. Give them responsibility. Give them a voice. Give them the opportunity to act. Then watch them move Phezulu Nangaphezulu , Higher and Higher. 💜⚜👏

🪽 A Sea of Gulls… in the Heart of the Highveld! 🪽

Ever wondered why you might see 50–100 gulls gathered around Alzu Petroport on the N4? It’s far more than a random gathering of birds.

These Grey-headed Gulls 🐦 have found a perfect inland ecosystem, combining water, food, agriculture, livestock activity and human food waste all in one location.

From the waterhole and wildlife enclosure to the surrounding agricultural fields, cattle feedlots and piggery operations, the area provides everything these highly social birds need to feed, rest and gather.

And there’s even more to discover. July to November is breeding season, when Grey-headed Gulls gather in large colonies around wetlands, dams and reed beds across the Highveld.

Nature has a remarkable way of adapting to the landscapes we create. 🌍

At GAWMT, we believe that understanding the wildlife around us is the first step towards protecting it. Every species has a story, sometimes you just have to stop and look up. 🐦🌿
