RISE Academy

RISE Academy RISE Academy is more than a music school; it’s a community that nurtures raw talent from the class
(1)

In 1998, our parent company, The Live Group, began hosting some of the largest music events in South Africa, offering aspiring artists the chance to take the stage. We noticed that these artists were struggling to get their foot in the door, and those who were able to secure gigs found it difficult to keep the momentum going in a competitive industry. Not for lack of trying, far too many young performers were forced to give up on their dreams because they didn’t have the support they needed to take their careers to the next level. Realising that we could make a difference, Rise Academy was born in 2015 with the goal of turning raw talent into marketable performers. The brainchild of Sue and Craig Green, Rise Academy teaches students how to be business savvy so that they can make a name for themselves in the industry. Our specially designed programmes, expert training, and mentoring have shown impressive results: Many of our graduates have booked to play at major events including Ultra, Fill Up FNB, and Joburg Pride.

It was great having Sam with us today. Sam is deaf. DJing is about rhythm, timing, and knowing your crowd. Sam just proves that louder than most.

Before you can control sound, you need to understand what happens to it.

How does a voice become an electrical signal? How does that signal travel through a system and return as sound through a speaker?

We teach the science clearly, then connect it to the equipment students will use in the real world. That is how knowledge becomes a working skill.

At RISE, students don’t learn live sound from diagrams alone. They work directly with professional equipment, trace real signal paths and learn how to identify problems before they become show-stopping problems.

Because when an audience is waiting, “I know the theory” is not enough.

The goal is not simply to teach someone which buttons to press.

It is to develop timing, track selection, confidence and the ability to make decisions while the music is moving. Those skills only grow when students spend real time behind the decks.

Less watching. More mixing.

When something goes wrong during a live production, there is no pause button.

You need to understand the signal, find the fault and solve it - while everyone else is waiting for the sound to return.

That is why our Live Sound training is practical. Students learn to build systems, operate equipment and troubleshoot under pressure with guidance from mentors who work in the industry.

Music is technical - but it is also deeply human.

It carries identity, creates connection and gives people a way to express what words sometimes cannot. At RISE, students bring their own stories, cultures and creative identities into the room.

We don’t want every artist to sound the same. We want each one to discover what makes them worth listening to.

Your talent. Our guidance. Your stage.
