Structured Play vs Free Play – Why Children Need Both!

Did you know that some of the most important learning happens through play?

🎯 Structured play helps children develop specific skills, follow instructions, build focus and gain confidence.

🌈 Free play encourages creativity, curiosity, problem-solving and independence.

The magic happens when children experience a healthy balance of both! Together, these two types of play help children learn, grow, explore and thrive.

At Nurturing Nannies, our classes are designed to support both guided learning and child-led discovery, giving children the best of both worlds in the presence of a loving nanny. 💕👶

Because every child deserves opportunities to learn, imagine, create and flourish.

Is Your Nanny Part of Your Family?

In many South African homes, a nanny becomes so much more than an employee. She is often the person who greets your child each morning, wipes away tears, celebrates milestones, reads bedtime stories, and provides comfort when you cannot be there. Over time, a relationship built on trust, care, and shared experiences naturally grows into something deeper.

For many families, a nanny becomes an extension of the family unit. She witnesses first steps, first words, and countless everyday moments that help shape a child's life. Children often form strong emotional bonds with their nanny, seeing her as a trusted and loving caregiver.

At the same time, it is important to remember that while a nanny may feel like family, she is also a professional who deserves respect, fair treatment, and appreciation for the important role she plays. A healthy nanny-family relationship balances warmth and connection with clear communication and mutual respect.

South Africa has a long tradition of nannies playing a significant role in family life. Many adults fondly remember caregivers who helped raise them and remained part of their lives for years, sometimes even generations.

So, is your nanny part of your family? For many South African families, the answer is yes. Family is not always defined by blood alone. Sometimes it is defined by the people who show up every day with love, patience, and care, helping to nurture the children we cherish most.

✨ Learning through play is one of the most powerful ways children grow and develop!

Through hands-on play experiences, little ones build confidence, creativity, communication skills and problem-solving abilities — all while having fun and feeling loved and supported. 💛

At Nurturing Nannies, our classes equip nannies with the guidance, ideas and confidence to facilitate meaningful play activities that encourage learning every single day. From sensory play to fine motor activities, our nannies learn how to gently support and nurture each child’s development through play-based learning. 🌈🧩🎨

Because when children play, they are not “just playing” — they are learning about the world around them. ✨

💕 A strong connection between a nanny and child creates a foundation of trust, happiness, confidence, and love. When children feel safe, seen, and genuinely connected, they thrive emotionally and socially.

At Nurturing Nannies, attending classes together gives nannies and little ones the opportunity to laugh, learn, play, and grow side by side — building meaningful bonds and creating joyful memories that last a lifetime. 💖✨

✨ Every baby develops at their own pace — and that’s completely okay. 💕

Some babies crawl early, some talk later, and some skip certain milestones altogether. Development is not a race. 🌱

Our latest guide explores what is generally considered “normal” from 0–12 months, while also helping parents understand when it may be worth seeking a little extra support. Early support doesn’t mean something is “wrong” — it simply helps babies thrive in the best possible way. 🤍

Most importantly: you know your baby best. Trust your instincts. 💗

Read through the milestone guide below and save this post for future reference. 👶✨
