How is screen time impacting your child's development?

Excessive device use is causing a crisis in children’s development. Why are devices to blame? Because screens are replacing experiences that are vital for children’s development. The use of smartphones and tablets as digital dummies or babysitters is robbing children of essential opportunities, such as: • Real social interaction with adults and peers. This helps them to develop skills they can never learn from a screen, such as how to make friends, co-operate and express their emptions. And interacting and playing with others makes children happy. • Hearing lots of adult words and engaging in conversation. Every minute of screentime reduces the opportunity for conversations and has a negative impact on a child’s vocabulary and language development. The cost? Young children are more unhappy than they have ever been, with an estimated 20% having a mental health condition. 1.9 million children (1 in 5) are struggling with speech & language, with long-term impacts on their academic achievement, mental health, & future life chances.
