"Mixed feeding" - giving baby breastmilk or breastfeeds and supplementing baby with powdered infant formula is a common scenario. There are many reasons "mixed feeding" occurs, such as low breastmilk supply, or when baby has poor weight gains, or even parents' preference. Although it may save some time, it is not advisable to mix breastmilk and formula milk in the same bottle. Precious breastmilk will be wasted if baby does not drink all of the milk offered, which then has to be thrown out. If formula is mixed with human milk prior to feeding there is a 41-74% decrease in the activity of lysozyme antimicrobial enzyme in the breastmilk, which then allows increased growth of the harmful bacteria E-coli in the milk. Lysozymes also protect baby from other pathogens. Artificial components in formula milk bind to live components in human milk making them less absorbable by baby's body. There is a simple solution to these issues - always feed baby all available breastmilk FIRST. If possible, allow some time before giving the formula milk to baby. If available breastmilk volumes allow, alternate breastmilk feeds and formula feeds through the day and night so they can be digested separately. All bottle feeds should be given using the Paced Bottle Feeding Technique ( watch YouTube "The Milk Mob - Paced Bottle Feeding" video). An IBCLC Lactation Consultant can help mothers increase their breastmilk production if it's insufficient to meet baby's needs.

B'milk changes throughout a single feed to match your baby’s needs. The milk at the beginning (foremilk) is lighter and helps with hydration, while the milk toward the end (hindmilk) is richer in fat to keep baby full and support weight gain. Let baby finish one side before switching, and watch their cues rather than the clock. 💙
