Whenever I hear an Afrikaans speaking tannie. I am immediately taken back to a very ambitious Candidate Attorney.

I knew very young that I wanted to be a lawyer.

I thank God for my parents who were able to take me through my schooling no matter the up & downs.

When I was there, my mentor was diligent about who I became. I really thank God for him and continue to watch close his journey as I still learn from a distance.

These tannies were the best teachers ever. Not only did they give me law but were equally invested in my life.

The law firm that I worked at gave me more than law & this is what I always emphasise to our interns. Don’t be fooled to think only the important people can teach you anything. To the contrary..it is those with no important title who are real teachers who shape your career!

I wrote my board exam only to fail accounting for lawyers…what a blessing that was! I thought I wanted to be an admitted attorney as it goes without saying when in a law firm…

But after law school..my heart would not allow me to remain..it kept calling me to ‘Serve my people’. Only then did I start considering being a legal adviser. Then got admitted as an advocate August of 2005.

I am saying all this to say…the journey is always straight. It’s not meant to be linear. There are those who plan things and they work out exactly as planned..but it is not everyone. Allow your heart to send you in the direction that will take you where you must land.

I am reflecting on my to doing my nails after bumping into this tannie. She does not have a clue what she just transported me to my genesis…🌸🌸

Well done, your hard work has paid off.

But please bear in mind that this is just the beginning of a very long and steep climb. Depending on the support you have…you are about to join a challenging terrain.

This is not to scare you but on the contrary, it is to prepare you for the harsh reality that is coming.

Our advice, major in building your soft skills as much as you focus on your hard skills.

If at all possible, consider vacation work throughout your undergrad life.

Don’t expect to be handed a job in a silver platter. That reality doesn’t exist except if your parents run organisations that will make room for you or they are connected somehow.

Be obsessed with discovering your purpose. I know many say it doesn’t pay…don’t listen to them. You were born to solve a specific problem. Therefore never rest until you find out what.

Lastly, please don’t get into tertiary & study any qualification. Find out where the world is leaning towards, I did not say South Africa but the world & get certified in that. And to your surprise, it might not need a university degree..therefore save yourself the trouble and get the short course or join a learnership program. The days of useless degrees are over.

Education is not only a degree or diploma. Do your research and you will see. Too many unemployed graduates, you don’t want to join them after 4 years.
