The ASSIST is a student-run organization that started in 2012 as a supplementary program aimed at translating the love for basketball evident among Alexandra youth into success in the classroom in order to harness learner’s academic potential and ultimately improve their lives. The popularity of the program quickly grew beyond the basketball courts, and in 2014, the ASSIST accepted its first non-basketball-playing students and focused on building a solid academic foundation as well as cultivating a sense of personal initiative and drive for excellence in its students. Through the support of the Wits Citizenship and Community Outreach program, we enlist a team of dedicated volunteer tutors from the University of the Witwatersrand whom we train to help support the academic endeavors of our students several days each week.

"Once a teacher; always a teacher", from a tutor to handling both Mentorship and Learner Relations portfolios as a director, Sicelo has done it all for the ASSIST!

We are delighted that he has finally graduated with his bachelor of Education degree and ready to continue imparting knowledge to the learners in our schooling system as an educator.

We wish him nothing but the very best in all his endeavors!
