From feeding supervisor to certified diver, Xolela Mpetsheni earns his fins Xolela Mpetsheni began his career at the Two Oceans Aquarium as a Feeding Supervisor, responsible for sorting and distributing food to the animals. While he enjoyed his role, working closely with the aquarium's divers and aquarists ignited a deep curiosity and interest in the world of diving.

What does Near Threatened on the Red List mean?
Our animal of the month, the Armadillo Girdled Lizard, is Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. But what does this actually mean?

Species that are Near Threatened, or NT for short, are not currently at risk of extinction in the wild but are close to qualifying for one of the threatened categories in the future. Near Threatened is one step below the lowest threatened category on the Red List.

Species experts will gather all the information on a species and assess how threatened it is, based on a set of criteria that relate to the species range (i.e., how widely it is distributed across the globe), as well as to the species population size (i.e., how many individual animals of the species are there). Armadillo Girdled Lizards currently inhabit an area of around 85 000 km2, with a sufficient number of mature individuals within it.

Although the Armadillo Girdled Lizard is widespread and relatively abundant within their environment, there is a huge concern that individuals are being removed from the wild for use in the illegal pet trade. This illegal poaching from the wild could severely impact this lizard's population numbers. This is the reason for the Armadillo Girdled Lizard's precautionary Red List status. You can help the Armadillo Girdled Lizard by not removing any individuals from their natural environments.

🦒 Happy World Giraffe Day! 🌍🦒

Today, we join the global community in celebrating these majestic creatures that grace the landscapes of our beautiful South Africa. Let's take a moment to appreciate and raise awareness about the unique and iconic giraffes that roam our national parks.

Did you know that South Africa is home to two distinct giraffe species? The Southern Giraffe (Giraffa giraffa) and the Angolan Giraffe (Giraffa angolensis) can be found within our diverse ecosystems, each with its own stunning characteristics.

Giraffes are not only the tallest land animals but also serve as gentle giants, playing crucial roles in our ecosystems. As browsers, they help maintain a balance between plants, trees, and herbivores, creating a harmonious habitat for all wildlife.

Unfortunately, giraffes face several threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and illegal hunting. On this special day, we must stand together to protect these remarkable creatures and their natural habitats.

Here's how you can make a difference:

📷 Share your favorite giraffe photos from our national parks and use the hashtag to spread awareness.
🌿 Support wildlife conservation organizations that work tirelessly to protect giraffes and their habitats.
🌍 Educate others about the importance of giraffes and their role in preserving our biodiversity.

Let's work hand in hand to ensure that future generations can witness the grace and beauty of giraffes in the wild. Together, we can make a positive impact and secure a bright future for these incredible animals.

Happy World Giraffe Day! 🦒❤️
