Eloff Street, Johannesburg, early 1900🦉

Eloff Street is one of Johannesburg’s oldest and most significant thoroughfares. Named after Jan Eloff, the city’s first civilian commissioner, it was the first street surveyed in the newly established mining town in the late 1880s.

The street gained prominence in 1890 with the opening of Park Station, which positioned Eloff Street as a central axis connecting the station to Market Square (now Beyers Naudé Square).

By the early 20th century, Eloff Street had become Johannesburg’s primary commercial and retail hub. It housed major department stores, including the first OK Bazaars, established in 1927 at the corner of Eloff and President Streets.

Roodepoort Station, 1896🦉

Roodepoort, located west of Johannesburg, developed rapidly following the 1884 discovery of gold on the farm Wilgespruit by Fred and Harry Struben. Though their Confidence Reef was not highly profitable, it attracted prospectors and led to the establishment of mining camps in the area. The significant 1886 gold discovery at Langlaagte further accelerated regional growth.
